Harry and Murphy's relationship frustrates me to the point where I can't enjoy a single thing when she's on the page.
This was a really great twist on the way the vampire genre is written these days (yay actual horror!), but it wants so badly to be a Stephen King novel that it stumbles along the way and eventually falls flat on its face. It should have been a hundred pages shorter, with less focus on random characters - but then that would have put too much focus on our main group and their story, which, somehow, got more boring as the novel wore on.
Three stars for the great creepy vibe the first third of the novel has, as well as the nightmarish version of the vampire. One star for the way the story drags on and on and on, to the point where I cared little for any character at all and wanted it to end.
And of course there was a cliffhanger.
Eh.

I'm really trusting everyone who says this gets better soon. I can see the elements that make this work, but so much of it frustrates me.
Harry, please stop talking about the breasts of every single woman you ever meet. I notice women's breasts too. I can't help it, I just do. I'm sure everyone does. But I don't wax fucking poetic about raised nipples when I do.
And how about that fridging, folks!

I don't mean to be so negative about this book. There were a few things I really liked - Michael, especially. And like I said, I can see the elements in place that I enjoy in my urban fantasy. Hopefully there's much more of the good stuff and less of the Man Boy Fantasy in the future.

I think I'm going to have to DNF this one, and having read some other reviews, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way.
It started out really well, and while I'm glad I had no idea of the twist going in, once it happened, I rolled my eyes and sighed. Everything got a little tired after that, and I found myself less and less interested in the novel.
Starting the next part of the novel after the reveal with the most boring character's journal entries was not the best idea. And there was way too much of it.
