chantaal 's review for:
The Strain
by Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan
This was a really great twist on the way the vampire genre is written these days (yay actual horror!), but it wants so badly to be a Stephen King novel that it stumbles along the way and eventually falls flat on its face. It should have been a hundred pages shorter, with less focus on random characters - but then that would have put too much focus on our main group and their story, which, somehow, got more boring as the novel wore on.
Three stars for the great creepy vibe the first third of the novel has, as well as the nightmarish version of the vampire. One star for the way the story drags on and on and on, to the point where I cared little for any character at all and wanted it to end.
And of course there was a cliffhanger.
Eh.
