Not quite as good as his later books. Since this book is an attempt to purge the demons from his trip up Everest, Krakauer never reaches any conclusion. However, the story is relayed well, and he paints good pictures of his climbing mates and their fates.
I thought this book was highly entertaining and full of sharp humor. I put it at three stars because it's a bit unorganized - Roach jumps around between topics and studies, and sometimes I had to go back and try and find her original point again. Other than that, it's stuffed with interesting notes and factoids about human sexuality and why it is the way it is.
This autobiography would be highly recommended to fans of Augusten Burroughs and the like. Sessums illustrates very clearly his life in the South as he discovers and comes to terms with his homosexuality. The wide array of friends and acquaintances keep the book interesting, and Sessums can easily make you feel as if you are right there with him.
I think this is one of Sarah Dessen's best books so far. Owen is like a darker Dexter (or a lighter Marcus, for Megan McCafferty fans), and the characters are all more interesting and memorable than many of hers have been lately. Speaking of Dexter, I love that he and the rest of the Truth Squad make an appearance in this book! I had never imagined all of Dessen's books to be set in the same town, but there are many overlaps with Just Listen. The central conflict is a little cliche, but the main and peripheral characters are all endearing.

I wasn't expecting anything fabulous from this book. It's pretty standard chick-lit. I did like the multiple plot lines, even if it was hard to keep all the characters straight at first.
I had high hopes for this book, seeing how hyped it is all the time, especially in the music scene. I can see how the repeated line about how music makes the main character feel infinite would have grabbed hold of that particular demographic. Aside from that, the book seemed a little thin and vague. The ending seemed to be purposefully chosen for shock value, and I felt that many of the characters seemed a little flat.
