This one is hard to rate and review. In general, books where the MCs for whatever reason refuse to admit/aknowledge/confess their feelings annoy me to no end. Very rarely do I read a book where this plot line feels necessary. I know that’s massively just my own preferences, though. There’s nothing wrong with this book at all, but it does affect my view of the book.

I’m not sure if Travis West has been a big part of previous series by the author or not, but from what I remember of book 1, Iris, I was surprised by his personality and behavior in this one. From the previous book and the blurb, I was expecting a stoic and serious boss/man who felt he found something special in Dylan, and had pined for him since. I guess that’s all still true to some extent, but the relentless teasing, making light of the night they shared, endlessly making lewd jokes and comments.. it just didn’t jibe with what I was expecting. We did atleast get a serious conversation about the teasing and their feelings eventually, but it didn’t feel like a big enough deal? I don’t even know if that makes sense. I should just go to bed.

I maybe should have started with this though: I enjoyed the book. They’re both still generally likeable characters, and a romantic suspense book would have to be horribly bad for me not to enjoy some of it. It is my favorite genre, after all. It was nice to see more of Saint and Iris, and to get an idea of who Atlas is, which made me very excited to read his book. I’m giving this one 3.5 stars, but that isn’t in any way a bad thing. It just means I probably won’t read it again. The audiobook was very good, which isn’t a huge surprise considering Tim Paige was in it (oh, and Gomez Pugh, which was cool!)

The spice was top notch too. I don’t know how they had the time to f*ck that much while sort of being on the run, honestly. I’m impressed with their refractory periods as well. Solid studs, lol.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below. Beware: Ridiculous amounts of quotes incoming.

How is each touch like the first fucking time?

Oh my, I had silly amounts of fun reading this book. Initially I didn’t even want to start it because it’s book 1 of a series with the same couple, but I literally couldn’t resist the blurb, and after like 10 pages there was no way I was stopping unless something terrible happened. An infamous thief gets captured by the police, gets the choice between prison and boot camp, and is eventually teamed up with a super-badass black ops group? Say no more. I can’t even explain how much I’ve been wanting a book exactly like this.

My birth brought no one joy. I can only hope my death brings no sorrow, either. And yet, what pathetic sort of existence ends without grief? Without tears?

It was plenty funny, the action was actioning, the fantasy elements were easy to grasp, and the romance. Y’all, I’m such a sucker for a really good slow burn, and this one was done so well. The small finger touches, looking when the other isn’t looking, when you can feel the connection and relationship slowly build and evolve… If it’s done well I’ll take that over something super spicy and fast burning any day, and this was done very well. The spice we got was quality as well, and waiting for it made it all the more hot when it happened.

He snorts. “And you have absolutely no sense of self-preservation.” I open my mouth to protest, but he’s right. I don’t. Like, none. Zip. Zero. In fact, if I weren’t such an indomitably cheerful soul, I’d probably be suicidal.

It’s a little painful to end on a tentative HFN when the next book isn’t out for months, but oh well. I shall live.

“Mic working?” “Yessir.” “Good. Let’s roll.” My eyes roll before I do because what a very tightwad military thing to say.

Forget shit’s creek and its missing paddle, I’m up a monster-infested mountain with spaghetti-legs and no tour guide.

“Can I tell you a secret?” “My gut says I should say no.” “You can’t tell anyone, okay?” My voice scrapes out of my throat in a rasp. “But sometimes, I listen to songs made after 1980. And emo.

We lie like that for a long time. Side by side. Wordless. Pinkie fingers brushing because anything more would feel like … something. And we’re both far too cowardly for that.

I have a theory: I don’t think she’s rude or bitchy at all. I think she’s just a very private, intelligent woman who is playing the media like a fucking violin.

This book was one of my early reverse harem reads forever ago, and it was a frequent reread as well. I’m such a sucker for a gritty bodyguard romance, and this certainly is that. When I saw that there was an audiobook as well I of course had to get it. Let me just say, one of the MMCs is Scottish, and it is pure joy listening to it, lol.

I really like the story. All of the characters are well developed and have their own journeys throughout the book. The male characters aren’t just copies of each other with a different hair color. Of course there’s a dominant type, a shy type and the calm guy who pulls them all together, but it really works. It goes a bit further than surface level.

I also love Briar. She’s not necessarily a super likable FMC, but she’s unapologetically herself. She’s a product of her upbringing and surroundings in Hollywood where she’s been hounded by paparazzi and sexually harassed by the public since she was a teenager. She’s brash and crude, but it’s mostly just a defense mechanism. She loves pink, she knows she looks fucking great, and she goes after what she wants. There’s none of that ‘I shouldn’t want this, this is so wrong’. She decides she wants and deserves three great men, and I’m here for it.

The suspense and the entire stalking situation really had me hooked the first time I read it. Of course I know what happens really well by now, but I think it’s a well developed plot, and it was certainly suspenseful to the very end.

The spice is spicy. Maybe don’t listen in public, lol. Let’s just say that three ex special forces soldiers can be very organized and thorough when it comes to pleasure. I think Briar made the right choice, lol.

I don’t know, this one just works for me. Probably because it’s heavy on the external plot and suspense. Somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, rounded up.

Her grief seemed to have stolen the happy pieces of her personality, anything that wasn’t nailed down with misery or sadness.

One of my favorites by Toni Anderson. When I don’t know what to read, one of her romantic suspense novels usually does the trick for me. This is a reread/relisten, but it had been a while since the last time so was lots of fun all over again. And considering it’s M/F which I struggle with a lot lately, neither character bothered me, annoyed me or otherwise grossed me out (too much), which is a massive win, lol. The book is very heavy on the suspense and case solving which is why I love these books. Sure the romance isn’t smooth sailing but it’s not overwhelmingly problematic or difficult either. Just the right amount for a solid romantic suspense book.

“Leave it alone, Pip. Else I’ll have you charged with obstruction.” Rather than backing away, this time she inched toward him until their lips almost brushed. Playing a game of chicken with their mouths. “Freedom of the press. Remember?” He narrowed his gaze before backing away. She’d won that round. He scratched his head and she thought she heard him mutter “pain in my ass” but wasn’t sure.

Pip wasn’t sure what her type was, but didn’t appreciate the fact a sandy-haired federal agent popped into her brain when she tried to figure it out.

It was a devastating combination, the man comfortable both washing dishes and throwing himself in front of bullets.

“Zeus is notorious for not wanting what he considers tarnished goods.” I take a deep breath. “So… tarnish me.”

Ait, let me just start by saying that I *love* Hades. Every version of him. The original mythology, Katee’s version, the Disney version, you name it. I read this book for the first time back in 2021 when it came out, and it’s one of the books that really got me hooked on reading again, and I’m so grateful for it. It was the first properly spicy book I ever read (and it is SPICY), so it was like my ‘smutty romance awakening’ lol. Just ignoring that I actually think it’s a great book for a moment, I would love it for that alone.

But yes, I love this book. Hades is of course my favorite character, but Persephone is badass, caring, sweet and very intelligent. They’re absolutely perfect for each other, and I love their love. And of course the exhibitionism is hot, ‘cause we all know I love that stuff.

I also highly enjoy the action-y parts. It’s nothing too overwhelming, but just the right amount to keep my inner action-junkie satisfied, lol. I also adore Katee Robert for the queer representation and diverse characters. I haven’t read the rest of the series, but I know that diversity only increases.

How sexy was that? To actually know that someone was listening, paying attention.

This is the book that really got me hooked on ‘psychic character helps the police’. I literally can’t get enough of this very specific trope. Sure, the book is a little dated, but considering when it was written and the fact that it’s M/F, I would expect a lot worse, lol. I’ve read it god-only-knows how many times, but was stoked to have access to the audiobook. It had also been a while since last time I read it, which made it a little bit more fun.

It’s got a good mystery where it’s also kinda not a mystery because you get chapters and scenes from the killer’s POV, but I love that. My biggest issue with the book is that it uses the words ‘females’ and ‘males’ quite consistently, which I really, really dislike, lol. Overall tho, heavy on the case solving and trust building between Brandt and Sam, lighter on the romance but what is there really brings it all together. Old but gold.

She needed a keeper. Someone to make sure she ate and rested. If no one else was in her life, then maybe, just maybe, the job fell to him.

Animals offered a respite for her senses. They exuded calm, peaceful energy waves. People, on the other hand, lived on emotion. They constantly projected erratic bursts of painful energy. The larger bursts from strong emotions hurt her the most. Happier, lighter emotions were easier to tolerate. But, when people were angry or upset, overwhelmed in grief, or even sometimes when they were ecstatic, they exploded with energy. For Sam, these waves became almost solid walls, pounding against her.

Book safety, updated content warnings, and tropes down below.

"You belong in a cell like that,” Finch said, and Scott flinched, looking up into the other man's face with a pit in his stomach. “What?” he whispered. Finch tilted his head at him. “I said, 'are you up for a road trip?' It's about an hour drive."

I'm struggling with finding the words to describe this book, as it's unlike anything I've read before, I think. It's a mixture of mental health, mental illness and the paranormal. Struggling alongside Scott and trying to figure out if what he sees and hears is a result of his schizophrenia, or if it's ghosts, or if it's just reality was very unsettling at times, but so well done.

What made it heavy was the descriptions of Scott's depression and struggle with mental health and mental illness. You can tell the author either has personal experience or consulted with someone who does, because it was all very real, and I imagine I'm not the only person that will be able to recognize a lot of what this character thought and felt.

Scott resigned himself to spending the afternoon pretending he was going to do the laundry. In reality, he took a nap, put on a movie on Netflix, then counted the odd numbers from 511 up to 627 and backwards by threes to distract himself from the thought of swallowing all of his remaining pills.

The book doesn't pull its punches when it comes to describing what it's like to live with depression and taking anti-depressants, among other medications. Scott struggles with keeping both himself and his living space clean. He can't sleep, but he can't focus on other things either. He's unmotivated, and his eventual sex life is almost ruined by the medication he's on. It's all very real and not at all romanticized.

What was the point of so much medication, of therapy, of feeling nothing and wanting nothing and fighting to sleep at night just so that he could wake up ready for bed again?

Scott's mother is likely sick herself, and instead of getting him help, she would use him and manipulate him and make the problem worse. She made me so angry while reading.

I haven't even mentioned Scott's love interest yet: Finch. This book is very much centered around Scott, but I enjoyed Finch's character as well. He was relatively uncomplicated, which I think was necessary, honestly. Everything else that happens and Scott's struggles was more than enough. That's not to say that Finch's character was flat or uninteresting, he just didn't take center stage until very late in the book when we needed him.

I'm giving it 5 stars, but there was a couple of things that bothered me. Scott is referred to as 'the brunette' what felt like a thousand times. It threw me off the first couple of times, but eventually it just felt bizarre. The second thing was the changing perspectives. I love dual POV, but I was confused several times while reading, because there was no clear markation or indication as to whose POV it was. Even though I’ll be seeing the words ‘the brunette’ in my dreams, this book is so fucking good. The completely unique, harrowing and beautiful story totally makes up for the sometimes dodgy editing.

I’ve read it two times now and I love it so much.

“So you don’t sleep much, huh? I see your light on up there all the time.” “I can’t maintain these bags under my eyes by keeping a normal sleep schedule, can I?” Finch nodded. “Exhaustion-chic is really in this year. I admire your dedication.”

Did he believe Scott at all, really, or did he think he was just sick, like everyone else? Scott sighed and leaned his shoulder against the wall. Was he sick? Was all of this real, or was it just in his mind? Was there even a difference?

Finch scoffed, shaking his head with a small smile. “How someone in your situation always finds the upside, I don't know.” “I don't have a choice,” Scott said. He shrugged one shoulder. “I've...been where I can't see an upside, and...it gets me put in the hospital,” he finished with a faint, dry smile.

She’s looking at you.
Scott glanced across at his mother, who was humming softly as she changed lanes to pass an old sedan.
She hates you.
“Okay, sweetie?” she asked when she noticed him staring at her.
“Want to jump out the window?”
“What?” he whispered.
“I asked if you wanted any coffee.”

He’s one more smart remark away from learning that the term “fragile” can describe both glass and bombs.

As a person who has trouble breathing when non-monogamy is even mentioned, you would think this series would scare me, but it really doesn't. I'm rereading the series (listening to the audiobooks), and it does such a good job of explaining polyamory and making sure that everyone, characters and the readers alike, are comfortable and have consented to everything going on. It's really well done, and I especially love this quote:

“I am in love right now,” he replies without missing a beat. I furrow my brow. “Then why am I here?” I ask hesitantly. “Because no one person should be solely responsible for another’s happiness and wellbeing,” Rhett replies. [...] “People aren’t jigsaw puzzles, love. We don’t have missing pieces, and, even if we did, I don’t think it’s fair to look for them in another person. It’s setting both parties up for bitterness and heartache when one inevitably asks for something the other can’t give.”

There's a lot of moving parts and tons of character development that needs to happen on top of the actual relationship developments in this series. Since I've already read the entire thing I know I'm not the biggest fan of the FF relationship as the alpha female isn't very easy to like and that entire relationship pretty much takes three books to develop. She is the prime alpha of the entire pack tho and has a ton of responsibility and guards her heart closely. Definitely not an easy situation.

Most of the dynamics are super sweet though, and they've all got their own distinct relationships, which I love. They all make sense as couples without changing up their personalities any. Just different parts of their personalities that gel well together.

I'm also thankful for the well-done BDSM aspects. There's a lot of focus on safety, trust and consent, which just warms my heart.

He was a Supervisory Special Agent ten years her senior, and someone who played by the book. She was a rookie who followed her gut.

Another Toni Anderson book I’ve read and listened to a whole bunch of times. They’re just comfort books at this point, and I adore the badass FMC in this one. She’s a hard-ass and doesn’t let any man put her down, but she’s also just a good and loyal person. Dominic is a commitment-phobe, but in a surprisingly non-annoying way. He’s had a rough time with the death of his mother and a revolving door of step-moms, but he’s also not a jackass about the whole thing.

The mystery part is great, and I love it when this author includes the POV of the villain of the story.
