There was a lot of potential to this, but I was so let down by how juvenile the writing was.
This book had some VERY cheesy elements (I rolled my eyes everytime he called her "the Lost Queen") but overall I enjoyed it. I wish there had been a bit more explanation about why Cassandra was betrayed by her business partner. It was more of a convenient plot point to get the hero and heroine together (which like yeah I understand is what a romance novel is) than a really understandable situation. Martin was just greedy? Like was that it? it was kind of a let down considering how high stakes the rest of the book was regarding the investors hounding Cassandra down

I LOVED this book. Gabrielle Union shared a really great variety of stories throughout her life which were a great mix of funny, touching, and sincere. She talks really eloquently about her experiences as a black woman in America (such as issues with colorism and Hollywood inclusivity) and her experiences as a rape victim and survivor. Her openness about her PTSD and anxiety, as well as her first marriage, were so genuine; it really felt like she was sharing these stories over a bottle of wine. I cannot recommend the audiobook enough, because her voice is an absolute delight to listen to.
I listened to the first quarter in 2017, but so happy to have this as my first 2018 read!

I liked it but I didn't love it. I thought Robin was an awesome character, and I really wish she had more to do. I didn't totally vibe with Comoran the way he seemed to ogle every woman in the vicinity rubbed me the wrong way. The investigation was also a series of interviews, and while the narrator did a fabulous job with the voices, I certainly wanted more action. The reveal was intriguing, but a little too speechy for me, which to be fair is typical of the Sherlock inspired mysteries (although Psych the TV show was definitely the best at this method)
I'm definitely interested in continuing the rest of the series, especially since I already have the next two on audiobook; this narrator is so good at the voices. I'm also looking forward to seeing how Comoran and Robin grow as characters.

Probably closer to a 3.5, mostly because the essays didn't feel particularly novel to me. However, I really like Luvvie's narration.
