So cute! I definitely prefer the anime to reading the manga, but since the anime doesn’t seem to be continuing on, I thought I’d try this out to see what happens next. This is such a feel good manga, I’m in love 😍

My heart is so happy. Wish I could live in this world

Goodreads sucks, this got deleted from my shelf somehow???

I LOVE THIS BOOK MORE THAN I LOVE LIFE.

According to my wrap-up on my blog from 2017: I AM DEAD. I REPEAT I AM STILL DEAD BECAUSE OF THIS BOOK

Overall, I thought this was a cute, fun middle grade read! The premise was interesting and I really enjoyed the parts where Rose travels back in time to Hatfield Palace where she serves Queen Elizabeth. The present timeline wasn’t my favourite though. I enjoyed the parts where Rose learns to horseback ride, but I felt like the bullying and the eventual resolution was a bit dramatic. The dialogue also felt a bit choppy and repetitive, though that could have changed since I’m reading the arc version.
I liked the insight into life during the Tudor era though. I don’t know much about the time period, but we saw a glimpse of the politics between different members of the court. The mystery aspect of the story was also really interesting and definitely kept me wanting to read more. I was expecting this to be a standalone though, so I was a bit shocked at the end when things weren’t tied up perfectly. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next!

(accidentally deleted this review cause I suck and goodreads sucks)

Unfortunately, this book didn’t live up to the hype I created for myself. The writing was awful, choppy, and full of unnecessary internal monologue and rhetorical questions. The characters were not consistent. The main love interest was super problematic, to the point where he locks Mulan up to “protect” her. There’s also some Asian erasure cause no one in the entire army of white men seems to notice Mulan isn’t white? She was bullied for it at home, but all of that is forgotten immediately when she leaves her village and disguises herself as a man. She also calls her love interest Wolfie (short for Wolfgang) and I wanted to throw up every time

(I wrote such an amazing review and now it's gone forever and I hate everything)

I totally decided to read this because of Twitter. Someone mentioned Suzanne Collins' other series, which I knew nothing about, and how the main character is a person of colour?!? And I literally thought "well, okay, that settles it" and checked it out from my library.

The writing style definitely reminded me of why I loved The Hunger Games trilogy so much. It didn't read very middle-grade to me either, which I think is something a lot of older readers would enjoy, but at the same time, I think if I had read this when I was younger, I would have still enjoyed it just as much and wouldn't have had trouble understanding what was going on. There are a lot of underlying themes that I noticed as I was reading, some of which are quite dark and difficult to read about, but I honestly forget how great middle grade as a genre is. I don't read it enough and I really should, because middle grade has this reputation for having simple plots and everyone jumping around happy under a rainbow, but it really isn't that. This book touches on family, hope, grief, betrayal, and war. And there's a lot of death too. They're topics that are addressed really well and in ways that a younger audience would understand and an older audience would appreciate just as well.

I almost teared up multiple times while reading this book. I find books that focus on family to be difficult to read sometimes, especially because I find myself comparing them to mine. But at the same time, it's so heartwarming to read about too. I did almost cry on the bus while I was reading the last bit. My life has been a horrible mess lately, so that's probably why, but there are some scenes that really hit you, especially the reunion scene near the end.

I loved the ending so much lol Luxa casually bringing up another prophecy and Vikus just ignoring Gregor as he rides away on Ares. Those two are great. Luxa's character development was just phenomenal. And I'm honestly excited to see where this series is headed.

Also, isn't it lovely when white folk need to be saved by a POC? It's a nice change from the white saviour narrative and I was totally squealing the entire time.

THIS SERIES...so good. I have no words.

Not going to write a long review for this one, but I loved all of it. It’s dark, it’s heartbreaking, it’s violent; but it’s also so heartwarming, and real, and it just addresses so many things that I would not expect in a middle grade. Which makes me wish there was even more hype surrounding this series. I feel like Gregor has grown so much as a character in this book. He’s also gone through a lot of trauma and I sort of hate Bartholomew Sandwich for ruining his life. Why can’t my boy just go to school and play with his sisters and help Mrs. Cormaci and not be stressed out???

Also, I pointed out to Mackenzie how
SpoilerGregor saving the Bane’s life mimics Merlin saving Mordred’s life only to have Mordred kill Arthur in the end
and I’m kind of freaking out at all the implications.

PLEASE READ THIS SERIES
