The Portal
by Kathryn Lasky
Overall, I thought this was a cute, fun middle grade read! The premise was interesting and I really enjoyed the parts where Rose travels back in time to Hatfield Palace where she serves Queen Elizabeth. The present timeline wasn’t my favourite though. I enjoyed the parts where Rose learns to horseback ride, but I felt like the bullying and the eventual resolution was a bit dramatic. The dialogue also felt a bit choppy and repetitive, though that could have changed since I’m reading the arc version.
I liked the insight into life during the Tudor era though. I don’t know much about the time period, but we saw a glimpse of the politics between different members of the court. The mystery aspect of the story was also really interesting and definitely kept me wanting to read more. I was expecting this to be a standalone though, so I was a bit shocked at the end when things weren’t tied up perfectly. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next!
(accidentally deleted this review cause I suck and goodreads sucks)
