I haven’t read first person book like this in a while so there was some getting used to. I didn’t really like the writing style in the beginning for the first couple chapters but I think was because the author tried a little too hard in describing everything at the beginning, past chapter 10 the story flowed more naturally and I enjoyed the book after that. I loved Alessandra’s relationships with all the characters and her view about sex and relationships for the “time period” it was set in. I understand that she and the king are supposed to be the villains in the story but it still kinda irked me what they thought needed to be done about the bandit. I thought the ending would be a little different and definitely didn’t expect when he found the vial of poison in her draw, tbh I kinda forgot it was there, but I would’ve liked for the truth about the king’s brother to come out somehow during their wedding. Idk I just really wanted a wedding scene after basically Alessandra being this fashion icon the entire book.

I had picked this book to use for an essay in school but I really liked nonetheless.
Sylvia Plath does a extraordinary job getting the reader into the head of Esther. You kind of feel like you’re losing your mind with the character while simultaneously seeing through an outside perspective and knowing her actions aren’t typical. This book does a great job of showing what it can be like to go through mental illness and how it is to lose yourself to the point you don’t recognize yourself.

There was a few parts that I didn’t like, for instance how her pregnancy was rushed through in basically one chapter. At some points it was very repetitive especially when she was talking about her children and what people thought about them.
BUT the family chapter at the end where they are all at the pool basically made up for everything.

I really liked this book but I think it was overhyped. I did love the multiple view points and connecting the dots between characters. But while book is definitely fast paced but it drags in a few places where not a lot happens.
I found that I was more angry rather than sad about their deaths bc they were so vague, especially Rufus’s. I think you tend to get more emotional when the deaths of characters are more descriptive. He should’ve gotten his death written out or through the perspective of Victor, so that the ending would’ve had more impact but when I finished the book I knew what was going to happen because of the last line but it felt unfinished and I expected something to come after that line.
I got about 60% thru in one sitting and at that point I didn’t understand why this was listed as lgbt when they just seemed like they were becoming close friends. I definitely noticed the slight hints towards the end that they started to like each other but when it got to actual romance it felt super rushed. I feel like the story could’ve done with out the romance and still had the same effect, it’s still the heartbreak of losing some you have come to love. If there was maybe more hints that they liked each other more throughout the book then it probably would’ve worked.

Cute story, but a few things annoyed me:
1 The ending was kind of rushed with the plot I feel like and completely forgot about Shameless towards the end.
2 Who calls their privates their ‘sex’ ? That was just weird to me
3 The other reviews of this book said things like “very steamy ” or even extremely but it’s very clear that anyone who fought this book was extremely steamy has never read any fan fiction in their lives. This book was barely graphic to me at least.
