I loved hearing of Avashia's connection to WV. She does a wonderful job of explaining how this beautiful state can give you complicated feelings. This book made me cry at points. Well written and with an excellent narrator.

Even listening made me tense as Bourdain deftly created the atmosphere of the culinary world.

Gave me many things to consider and process. Wonderfully written and compelling. This will be floating in my head for a while.

Tubbs manages to tell the three women’s stories without them getting muddled or overwhelming. She also ties them to racism and experiences of the past and presents. Very well written.

This book will need a reread from me. Wonderful setting and prose, though I found the plot difficult to follow at times. Marlon James style gives it the feel of this is an old story I should know, and also something brand new as it happening right here and now. Tracker and Mossi's relationship and the later loss of Mossi and the mingi children was heartbreaking. Since we were so close to the end of the book (and also so far, it is a chonky book), I didn't expect that to happen.
Sometimes I found character motivations and reasoning a little hard to parse out, especially with such a large cast. I will be reading the sequel, however I might wait till the third one is out so I can read all three in one go.
