A bit of a melancholic volume, again... well, at least some chapters and mostly only the middle. The beginning was cute and the end too, and cheerful as well. They've got christmas plans and are totally in a holiday mood. There was also a snowy chapter.
But the middle. Well, it was about what they want to do after school. Looking for a job or university, that stuff. Chidori seems to have a plan, more or less, but Nanoha has no clue, and that totally reminded me of myself. Thinking of your future can be so scary... especially when everyone around you seems to know what to do, and you're just left behind...
There was a comment again about Chidori's weight, however, it was then said that she shouldn't worry about how she looks like, and instead focus on enjoying herself. That was some nice development on the author's side.

That was such a beautiful arc for Mai!!
I really loved it. <3
I'm afraid Chidori & Nanoha will go back to volume-1-distance in public now, because Mai told them they should be more careful, if they want to keep it a secret. Argh! Did she have to say that? I was really hoping for them to finally tell their friends, especially since there were enough confirms that they'd be totally supportive of them!
Oh well.
Maybe them being awkwardly distant again will raise suspiciousness, though...
The second half was very mature.
The first few chapter, however...
I don't get why bathhouses are always such a thing in Manga. At least for females. Is it really a thing in Japan for females to grope each other when they're naked, and all they ever talk about is their cup sizes??
I don't get it. If one of them were a guy, they'd call him a pervert and that he's sexually assaulting her by just staring at her breasts. Yet when it's another female, it's okay??
How do they even still see themselves as heterosexual when they clearly love women's breasts? Think about it...

When I saw the chapter titles in this volume, I was really afraid that something truly bad might happen, regarding the love rival thingy. Well, there still was drama, but not as bad as I feared!
Surprisingly, there generally didn't happen anything major in this volume, considering the "cliffhanger" at the end of the last volume was pretty scary!
And then this turned out rather mature, actually.
Well, the reason why there was a "storm" on their school trip, wasn't mature at all, but everything else...
The love rival actually ended up helping them, even if that's not what she was planning.
There were some moments, where, if Mai weren't so eager to tear them apart, I could see them as a poly. Like, the scene in the train, or Mai wanting to tease Chidori (which made it seem like she's crushing on her actually)... so, yea, pretty sad the author had to make Mai so annoying, 'cause otherwise I'd have my fun enjoying them together.
The whole school trip did bring back memories from my own school trips, particularly one in 10th grade... not gonna spoiler, but it was pretty similar for me and a close friend, just like what Chidori & Nanoha were going through. Well, the specific reason was different, but overall... something I'd definitely change, if I could turn back time. :/
But considering I'm a sucker for melancholy, I did kinda enjoyed it, so I'm giving this volume 1 star more (planned to rate it 3 stars at first).

Meh...
So much for progress.
Well, they did have another kiss but it took like 5 chapters until they calmed down from the embarrassment of their first kiss, and now there's another love rival.
The first chapter was really funny, though. Seeing their different reactions – Chidori ending up stress eating and making her grandma confused, and Nanoha being like, "I'm finally an adult now". XD
Then there were was just a bunch of awkwardness, and at some point it actually made me feel icky, because they acted as if they had a fight or something bad had happened. A kiss shouldn’t be negative (well, unless you’re physical-contact-repulsed, but that’s not the case with the two).
Then they finally talked about it, more or less.
... And then a new love rival comes in. And this time it's a serious rival, because it's a childhood friend and she's kinda part of their friend group now. Oof.
Worst is also that the rival literally saw them kiss, but all they took from that was, "oh, if she's into girls, that means I have a chance".
And they also hugged – like a real, proper hug, which Chidori & Nanoha didn't have.
I know Chidori & Nanoha are endgame (I mean, just look at the covers of the next volumes...), but still, though, there will be some drama and hurt, and ugh... I'm not eager for that.
Also, there were some chapters, again, where it was about Chidori's weight and I'm seriously so sick of it. Everyone keeps teasing her how "chubby" she is, when she's not even chubby, and she herself keeps thinking Nanoha will hate her, if she gains weight. There was a whole chapter about it even. And she didn't even look in the slightest, as if she gained weight!!
C'mon. If someone isn't unhealthily overweight, please stop with these remarks. It's extremely annoying and toxic behaviour.

They kissed!!! I repeat: they kissed!!
That was so unexpected, ngl! Of course I'm happy, but damn! Didn't expect some progress that soon!
Especially because they told someone they're going out, so I thought that will be the only progress made in this volume, and – bam! Kiss coming in! Just like that!
Also, we finally got the backstory with her senpai – yes, the full backstory, not just some snippets. It was predictable, but good (well, good that it was finally shown) nonetheless.
I didn't like the beach chapter much... every time someone makes comments about Chidori's big breasts or her being "chubby" (when she's not even chubby) is just annoying.
Overall cute though. Again, I did not expect so much progress in this volume. Maybe we're finally getting a reveal for their friends next volume?

It's kinda a back-and-forth with this series. At the beginning of each volume, they are rather "distant" and at the end, they get more skinship. There's no real progress and is more of an episodic story.
But they were so close to telling their friends about their relationship though!! So close.
Thanks to her sister as well.
Ngl, I was a bit annoyed when the sister saw them, and then afraid, when she connected the dots and was grinning, but in the end, she did help them a bit. I'm excited for more now, actually, and hope she'll be a recurring character! ;D
(Cause I feel like, they might keep playing this "game" for years, if her sister doesn't help them...)
That cliffhanger at the end tho! Could that be Igarashi? :0
She seems quite different from the backstory chapters, so I'm a bit afraid of what drama she's planning...
Just like the other two volumes, it was overall cute and had lots of funny moments.

Still very slow-paced, but we got a verbal "I love you" and a hug!
The page where Nanoha says, "I was trying to keep it from them no matter what, but now that I said it, I'm relieved", is definitely foreshadowing of them telling their friends about their relationship. I hope it’ll be soon.
The backstory from the Valentine's chapter from volume 1 continued, and surprised me! In a good way. Now I want a POV from Igarashi tho...
I didn't like that one comment in one chapter, saying, that Nanaho is a girl, so she should act like one. Gender roles are BS and I hate it every time someone brings it up.
At least it was just one small comment!
Well, overall, a cute volume again, and I'll continue reading.

One of my favorite books in primary school.
Re-read it again just now (September 2023), as I was going through old boxes from my childhood and found this precious gem. The memories. <3

Very slow-paced but it does have quite a lot of cute and also funny moments!
It is a bit annoying how often is mentioned that they are in a *secret* relationship, even though I actually do like the secret relationship trope...
Maybe because it's clearly stressing Chidori out, and the friends also seem supportive of queers? At least there was a chapter that more or less confirmed that the friends aren't homophobic.
I do get it's not that easy, but I do hope they (esp. Chidori) find the courage to tell them soon.
The highlights were when they held hands, which happened twice in this volume!
The funniest moment for me probably was the messaging scene (esp. with the friends' reactions) and the scene in the nurse room (with the nurse's obliviousness). XD
That one comment of Chidori thinking hugging her crush is shameful, left me a bit icky. I hope that was a translation mistake, because why would hugging someone be shameful?? If it meant "holding" or kissing, okay, but hugging??
