I didn't like Lib at all, and I felt the suspense lacking. I didn't have any urge to pick it up and keep reading, and when I finally had to return it to the library, I decided to just go ahead and call it. Doubt I'm going to pick it back up.

From the prologue, I thought I would love this book. The language is exquisite in its intricacy, and I love the fairy tale mood. Unfortunately, the majority of the book is not like that. Interesting characters turn dull, plots are introduced but never resolved, and the main character is like...the biggest dick. Tana French is clearly a very talented writer, but I ended up frustrated by this book rather than really loving it as I had hoped to.
I can't tell if I like or hate this completely disturbing and compelling book.
Basically, there isn't a single likable character, the whole thing is chock-full of racism and sexism and homophobia and VIOLENCE, and I can't even tell if that's because it's anchored to the corrupt L.A. of the forties or because the author is 100% depraved. I was so disgusted throughout the novel, but I kept reading because I had to see the gory tale to its conclusion. Full of twists, the mystery itself shines through layers of grime and caked, dried blood.

Just having a hard time finding the motivation to keep reading this :/ the author uses a very jokey style which sometimes works and sometimes falls flat. I think it's just not for me.

After his girlfriend Clea gets sent across the country for boarding school and an injury ends his football career, Cody is at loose ends. His life slowly devolves into a depressing routine of work, booze, and boredom- until he hears that Clea has gone missing. Still in love with the girl who is now his ex, Cody packs up and road trips from Colorado to Vermont to aid in the search. Everything is not what it seems, and no one can be trusted.
While I zoomed through this story, owing to its accessible writing style and compelling mystery, I did notice that the pacing seemed somewhat off. Every development in the case happens within the last 75ish pages of the book, which ramps up the tension and keeps you hooked at the expense of making the book as a whole feel unbalanced. An unsatisfying ending exacerbates this issue. I enjoyed this book, but I also found it somewhat frustrating.
