we love an own voices sci fi novel! this book was really entertaining. I loved the take on theology here and the way the book was structured made it hard to put down. yasira and ev were great characters, really developed, which you don’t see a lot in today’s popular sci fi with women, queer characters, or neurodivergent characters. this universe’s conception of gods and theology was also incredibly creative and I loved it. some of the side characters (especially tiv) felt pretty flat, which was my biggest issue. just in general, though, the fact that the characters were so diverse made this book even better. the outside never felt slow or dragging. I hope to see more books in this universe in the future!
this collection was really impressive. it’s like a landscape where the medium is poetry. prikryl did a fantastic job of capturing urban environments, especially in the “waves” poems. not just the physicality of it, but the way people are here. her “anonymous” poems describing people were some of my favorites, as well. the circular nature of the collection’s structure was really effective in highlighting her keen observations. my copy had some confusing wording, but that might just be because I didn’t have the final version. this author’s poetic style is very modern and gripping. I enjoyed reading this book. thanks to netgalley, crown publishing, and tim duggan books for providing me with this ARC.
this book was an experience. at first, I was a little unsure about it, and throughout, I was pretty freaked out by the body horror. however, by the middle of the novel I was completely hooked. on the surface, this is a sci fi horror novel/allegory for environmental destruction. once you get into it, though, it’s a beautifully written character study and exploration of love and identity. I feel like I’m a better writer for having read this.
