While obviously a few phrases, and the original title, did not age well at all, this book was fantastic. A quick read that I finished in one afternoon, this was satisfying and kept my mind working in overdrive. This my first Agatha Christie, and I don't believe it will be my last.
This was completely beautiful and stunning. There were time I wasn't sure I was following, and I found myself flipping back to remember timelines, but in a way, that made me enjoy it more. The imagery was divine, the love was true, and the awe was real. This was a surprising read and a new contender for a favorite.
This is one of those books that reminds me why I love historical fiction so much. It was raw and painful, but the imagery!! I could SMELL the butter and the croissants in the beginning, and I could feel the hunger and the dread as the story wore on. Unbeknownst to me, this is based on a very, very true story, so I highly recommend the author's note at the end - only once you've finished of course.
I think, for me at least, the only reason this book isn't 5 stars is the shortness of the book itself. But perhaps the reason I liked it so much was how long it's been since I finished A Court of Wings and Ruin. I loved getting to see more of th members of The Night Court, loved getting to see more of the Archeron sisters, loved getting to see more of Velaris, but I wanted even more. I know this was intended to just be a novella and to be book #3.5, but as I read it, I wanted it to keep going, to keep developing. So on to the next one!
