Such perfection! I love the way Doreen Green interacts with friends and foes alike. She's smart, creative and fearless, but also funny and kind.
This issue was perfect. Squirrel Girl and the Avengers fight laser dinosaurs and that's just the back drop. Nancy carries this issue easily, since she's a hilarious wonderful character in her own right. Packed with quotable lines, I did not stop laughing out loud as I read these Squirrel Girl legends.
Doreen and Nancy are so charming and I was really excited by the new characters introduced in this issue. Also a super creepy new antagonist entered the scene and the issue left off on the cliff-hanger-est ending of the series to date.
So. Without getting into spoilers I think I can say that I was nervous while reading this book about the places it might have gone, even as highly as I think of Alafair Burke. I've listened to some of her interviews about this book describing how little she was expecting when she began writing this novel how far the nature of public discourse about sexual harassment and assault could come. As much as I love stories where the characters are suspect and capable of evil actions and gender has no bearing, I worried about whether the story would go in a direction that exonerated a man and cast his accuser as a villain, which could send an irresponsible message, especially now. Those were my fears and I won't get into the details of how this story resolves and my thoughts about that aspect further because it's deep plot details. Overall this wasn't my favorite Burke novel, but it was a gripping read and the characters were so well developed - I felt the twists were generally not things I predicted, but they fit perfectly into my grasp of the characters. And at the end, this book left me sad in a way that I guess I enjoy. Still thinking about this one yep.
I was really excited about this book's premise, but I found the pacing kind of challenging in it's slow start. By the very end it reached page turner status, and I delighted in the ending even though I was expecting it. I'm interested to see there is another book on the horizon in this setting, and I'll very likely check it out.
This book way exceeded my expectations and I'm super excited about reading more of the series. The concepts of the world are intriguing and set up great dramatic scenes. Mercy is a really excellent protagonist, and shares the stage with many other lovable characters. I didn't even mind the romantic bits, I think owing to the way Mercy feels refreshingly adult in her relationships.
This book was so hard to put down or stop thinking about. Even though the subject matter was constantly awful, I was captivated by Jackson's writing and constantly on my toes, kept guessing in the best book way.
The chronology of this book was super confusing. I'm not sure if the physical book has timeline info on the chapter headings, but I was really missing it on the ebook. Other than wondering constantly what order the chapters were occurring, I enjoyed being reunited with this cast of characters.
I just dislike Harris' narrative style, and the plot here also stumbled a few times for me.
It took me a little while to get invested in this story, but as the ominous undertones ramped up so did my curiosity and excitement. So many questions come to light as Camellia learns more about her world outside of the bubble in which she was raised, and I could not have asked for a better character to wonder at the myriad unknowns alongside. I love her spirit and that she never lets things go. The clash between her thoughts about what beauty is vs the demands of the people she comes to work with really resonated with me, and was a strong aspect of the story alongside the thrill of uncovering the secrets of court and the book's larger plot. The characters and the worldbuilding are both so good, and once things start rolling the pacing makes it hard not to tear through the story. I cannot wait for more from this series!
