The Wife by Alafair Burke
4.0

So. Without getting into spoilers I think I can say that I was nervous while reading this book about the places it might have gone, even as highly as I think of Alafair Burke. I've listened to some of her interviews about this book describing how little she was expecting when she began writing this novel how far the nature of public discourse about sexual harassment and assault could come. As much as I love stories where the characters are suspect and capable of evil actions and gender has no bearing, I worried about whether the story would go in a direction that exonerated a man and cast his accuser as a villain, which could send an irresponsible message, especially now. Those were my fears and I won't get into the details of how this story resolves and my thoughts about that aspect further because it's deep plot details. Overall this wasn't my favorite Burke novel, but it was a gripping read and the characters were so well developed - I felt the twists were generally not things I predicted, but they fit perfectly into my grasp of the characters. And at the end, this book left me sad in a way that I guess I enjoy. Still thinking about this one yep.
