I was surprised at the supernatural components of this novel. Although it was a complete departure of what I expected and what I usually read, I could appreciate the story.
I have to admit, this book was somewhat of a slog for me. It took me over a week to read it and I almost abandoned it. However, the end made the journey worthwhile and since Towles' writing is so luxurious and so remarkable, I had to give the novel 3.5-4 stars.
I read this book in a day and I finished it with a little catch in my throat. There were a few niggling things that prevented more than a four star review, and the fact that it is new-adult fiction, however, I did enjoy this novel.
A creatively written story set in the future in NYC with a "Gossip Girl" edge. I give it a solid 3.5 stars.
Solid 3.5 stars. Even though the story was lacking in substance in relation to some of the plot and characters, i just couldn't put it down so I rounded to a four.
I could not put this one down. I started it Christmas night at 10pm and finished at 2am. Good story.
Great story! And oh, how I disliked George. Poor Catherine.
Good psychological thriller!
I found this novel to be somewhat of a bore. The ending helped to pull it out of a two star rating, IMHO.
Oh what a wonderful book. It would have me laughing out loud, then have a tear a couple of pages later. Ove was such an interesting character, completely endearing and so crotchety. His faithful, undying love for Sophia is what we all can hope to find in our lifetime.
