Idk how you dislike this. Wholesome and heartwarming.

This was overhyped I think. It was okay. Kinda tried too hard at the end with a funhouse ride amount of "gotcha!"s. I'm not pleased with the tendency to make mental illness and horror one interchangeable storyline. Isn't it scary when reality is blurred through generational mental illness? Sure, but is it a fair subject of a horror novel? I'm not sure. Feels a little predatory. The mental illness wasn't the only storyline but it was presented as a gotcha. Like, oh you think this is scary? Well what about if someone is also CRAZY? Dun dun DUN! I don't know. Just didn't do it for me. I liked most of the character development, the plot was ok (inspired by real events) but I felt done before the endings came.

Suspenseful. Interesting characters. Liked the pacing of the story.

I was looking for something very specific and this book didn't contain it. But I'm very into Edith Head at the moment! Love the content, wish it was more comprehensive with more sketches.

Truly repulsive imagery that left me gagging at times. Thanks, Nick Cutter. A good book stays with you and I think this will haunt me in quick shocks and shudders of remembering. You've got a way with words that brings up bile.

I've been researching Edith Head and this was a confection of a wisp of a book. It didn't teach me much about her. It was more about her clients, like how Marlene Dietrich loved hats, for example. The (watercolor?) illustrations are wonderful.

I thought this was just okay. Unsettling, mysterious (was Zoe already committing violent acts or dispatching other partners during the day?) and hurried but torturous in the midst of scenes. I had higher expectations and they were not met. A lot happened in 100 pages. But it was frenzied. I also find the criticism of a lesbian relationship valid, why do these characters have to be mentally ill, violent, dysfunctional? It's fair criticism. We don't see a lot of gay horror, so why do these characters have to be gay to carry out this story?

How cool that my 65th book of the year (my 2021 goal) was Brag Better! Allow me to brag better about it.

I'm thankful for the job I have that affords me balance in my days and weeks for reading the way I do and parents who both like to read. Today we are 61% of the year and I've read 65 books so I am on track to meet last year's 101 book challenge. I'm proud I completed this year's challenge ahead of schedule and that I did the same the last few years.

PS This was a CEO recommended book and while it's directed to women in the workplace, it more broadly applies to anyone who's a member of "the Qualified Quiet" - those who do their work and get passed over for opportunities and are overshadowed by the loudmouths at work.

A little juvenile but maybe that's the point. The things that feel (and therefore are) huge and earth shattering when you're 15 look and feel smaller in the rearview, if you stick around. Part "it gets better", part mixtape, part Gossip Girl, this story was ok. If you're depressed, keep going.

Overhyped, underperforming. A mix of Memento and House of Leaves. Meh. Reflecting on this now. I like the atmosphere a lot more. The story was ok and I could compare it favorably to The Book of Strange New Things.... Where the main character goes to another planet where he tries to understand the beings there as a pastor, proselytizing. Upgrading to 3.75.
