The Loch

Fran Dorricott

DID NOT FINISH: 34%

Dialogue was amateurish, clunky, and boring. Story hadn't started to develop yet.

This book is written on the premise that 1. Cryptozoology is a bona fide field of science and 2. Cryptids exist.

As a sceptic who is fascinated by the stories and beliefs surrounding cryptids, I found this to be a mostly enjoyable read. The science and evidence mentioned do not support the existence of cryptids as much as Freeman claims, but I did appreciate that he included examples of cases where known animals were more likely the cause than unknown animals.

The book covers a wide range of cryptids, and despite the sometimes painful attempts at humour, I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Firstly, why was that bit about autism included? As an autistic person, I found it completely unnecessary, poorly considered, and pretty offensive. There was no reason to include it, and there was no attempt at making it relevant either.

Secondly, as a descendant of one of the few Irish families believed to possess a banshee, the information included regarding banshees was woefully inaccurate.

The author's attempt to merge environmental and social issues with cultural beliefs and cryptozoology, alongside pseudo-history, failed spectacularly for me.

DO. NOT. RECOMMEND.
