The idea was good but the execution was lackluster.

I really like her songwriting and there are some really lovely lines in here, but none of it was enough to make me want to read this a second time. I prefer my poetry devourable. 

There are a lot of answers, but somehow I remain as confused as ever.

This started out as a bland horror, but it got more interesting when you learn the whys and hows. I liked the anti-capitalist message; timely horror is always enjoyable. It just didn't have anything that really grabbed me or stuck with me.

This started strong--a fun magic system, a brash heroine, an interesting world. And then the romance aspects (and I use "romance" lightly) take over and ruin it. I can't bring myself to keep going with the series. Rant and spoilers below the tag.

Adrias was a piece of shit for being dismissive and rude to Marlowe after she stayed up all night baking honey cakes AND HE NEVER APOLOGIZES. And then he acts like a dick again when she forces him to tell her how he feels and he's all mad because he's in love with her, and then she feels bad for him?! Absolutely not. He treated her like dirt and we are no longer forgiving men for treating us badly just because they say they love us.

Also honestly the parents were the most interesting part of this. When you find out Marlowe's mom left Vael to raise her kid alone and she never once regretted it? Chef's kiss. Learning all the games they're playing was so fun. I'd have devoured an entire series about them. Oh well.
