Wouldn't have read this were it not on the book club's agenda. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone who values the time they spend reading. I'm giving this two stars instead of one for two reasons. I am sincerely glad the author had and took the opportunity to share his personal story, and I realize that while rating this work, I'm making the assumption most readers aren't entirely ignorant of the circumstances in which people living with addiction often find themselves. To me, however, this type of account is nothing new or unique. I'm actually quite tired of hearing addiction used as an excuse for the choices people make. And keep making.
Hollow. I believe that's the word I'd use to describe the author's tone (which left me wondering). Maybe shallow. Your characters' dog has been inexplicably mutilated, and their reaction is to sit in the garage, hint at love affairs, and talk about buying a new house? Seriously?
Graphic: Animal cruelty
Moderate: Animal death
Nice work in watercolor. Loved the cover art and couldn't resist flipping through the story.

Interesting concept, but with faulty logic forming the arguments behind reported experiments, I can't take it very seriously. My rating went from four stars to three upon noticing the authors' use of "schizophrenic" as a noun and being forced to question how several persons' reassurances of confidentiality may have been violated. If that chapter were to be removed (or at least rewritten), I'd probably recommend this book to friends interested in terror management theory.
