Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. I am so grateful to have been sent Rebel Skies and Rebel Fire in advance of the North American release!
I truly have no words, I felt so many different emotions going through this book. I loved how fast-paced and adventurous it was while attaching me to the characters so early on that I felt the need to finish it quickly to see where their story would go.
Kurara has no memory of her past life when all of these events start to take place and she’s solely driven by wanting to get her friend back, the most pure form of love. Along the way, she learns that shikigami, paper spirits that are usually controlled by a master, have their own souls and are their own beings with feelings and pain that the humans blatantly ignore. Kurara recognizes this and that allows her to learn so much about herself and her own power.
I would absolutely recommend this to any fantasy lover or really any reader. I found myself in tears over the storyline especially towards the end, and I think there are truly valuable lessons to be learned through these characters. I loved getting to peek into Asian culture as well, and I cannot wait to read the sequel, Rebel Fire, later this year!

The Fortune Seller gave me Pretty Little Liars vibes, with Rosie being the one in the group that stood out from the rest. Annelise and her secrets cast a mysterious feeling over the friend group, eventually destroying the group altogether, making this a total page-turner, and I found myself dying to listen more and more (hence why I finished the book in just two sittings). I loved the pacing, especially getting to spend time with all of the characters before any major plot points. Without spoiling anything, this book gets WILD. I’m usually a fantasy reader, I like the lore and world-building and escapism, but I absolutely devoured this book because of the amount of drama and twists and turns!
The narrator, Stephanie Cannon, also deserves a huge round of applause. It is so easy to over or underdo a book like this, but she did a great job portraying the different characters to make it easy to follow without it being distracting. I tend to listen at 1.75 or 2.0 speed and her voice was still perfectly clear.

If you loved Daisy Jones and the Six, I would absolutely recommend The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers to you! The storyline is just as juicy and intriguing and I found myself wanting to listen as fast as I could to get to the ending! Most of my hesitance to rate this book higher was related to my feelings about the characters, I didn’t love some of Mari’s actions but they did contribute to the story so I think it’s really a me thing. That aside, it did reel me in and I found myself also wanting to know the question that Mari was digging to answer.

Thoroughly enjoyed my time spent reading this poetry. It was very emotional and raw and true but also so beautiful. I found myself awestruck multiple times reading each poem and just refused to put it down. I would love to and hope to read more poetry like this, poetry that really gives you a glimpse into a real life in a very clear and blunt yet beautiful way.
