I want to clarify my style and enjoyment ratings for this book and state that nonfiction in general isn’t my chosen genre, but I’m trying to branch out more this year since fantasy dominates my reading. This book has so much information and it’s written in an academic style that I really struggled with when I started this book (I could normally finish a book this length in a day or two for comparison). However, by the time I got to the end, I was blown away by and very grateful for all of the information and examples and I see why they’re important to the point being made. My rating has nothing to do with the content itself, but with how it was delivered as someone who doesn’t usually read books like this, but I do really appreciate this kind of writing having finished it and I’m eager to read more like this.

I was very much intrigued by the description and genres especially knowing that this world had been built already but it wasn’t necessary to read this spin off but I’m not sure of how true that is. At least for me personally, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information that you have to take in, the different storylines, a ton of characters, and for that reason I am choosing to abandon this book. 
It takes me a long time (probably too long honestly) to choose to not finish a book. At the date of making this decision, I haven’t picked up this title in a week. I acknowledge that I am new to the ARC space and NetGalley but I also don’t believe I should hold onto a title that I’m not enjoying, as I wouldn’t hold onto it if I wasn’t given a copy in advance to review. I don’t think I am the intended audience and I wouldn’t want to do the author or publisher a disservice or leave a negative review when I know part way through that I’m not going to be able to leave something positive based on my review criteria.

I was so excited to receive the ARC for this book, I’d read snippets and I never thought in a million years that I’d get it but here we are!! I loved the story overall, I think it says a lot about growing up, having faith and confidence in yourself even though you’re different, and setting things straight when you make mistakes, especially ones that hurt other people.

Part of why it lost points in style in particular were the points when Tabatha broke the fourth wall. That’s entirely a personal style thing and it didn’t take away from the overall story too much, and there were parts of that style that I did enjoy and think were important to the story itself.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this to friends who like magic and mysteries, and I think it’s a really great young adult book that reminds you that yourself is the best version of you.
