I wasn't expecting much from 20 pages, but this was actually great. I'd love to read a full novel. Imagine you're masturbating in the middle of the ocean, get interrupted by some guy, and only realize he's a merman at the end. Amazing.
The world was semi-interesting but I didn't like the characters or the style much.
I received an ARC through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Unfortunately, this book just wasn't for me. I'm just a bit too young for the nostalgia, and I don't know enough about creating videogames to really understand or keep up with the metaphors. I also couldn't get used to the formatting of the dialogue lines, they just got lost in the other text for me.
It's a kind of melancholic, thoughtful book about three queer/trans friends, with lots of trans side characters. I think it will find its readers.

I cried at Morgan's Mom's letter, tbh.
A coming-of-age story where both main characters have a rich and nicely developed story. Obviously Morgan's trans themes were more personal to me, but I also liked Eric's arc with the family expectations, struggles, and brotherly love.
It's a tough story where Morgan has to fall down hard before she realizes things have to change. It's not always easy to read, but I think a very nice trans coming-of-age story.

A good start. No instant adoration, but I like it. Alanna is very Gender but also a bit anti-gender with all the "you have to learn to be happy as a girl" stuff.
A bit instalove, but understandable at this length, and sometimes it's nice to read about people just clicking. Even if they're both BDSM Doms and they're not kink-compatible. Oops? For that reason, the BDSM was less present in their sex life I think, although definitely /there/ - and as always, I liked that they were part of a community with events and social spaces.
A novel of two young Black people and their families whose life is ruined by a racist mistake. I was expecting it to have an open ending, but I was hoping I was wrong. :( Also Frank :(

I enjoyed this author's previous book but I possibly liked this one even more. Codependent twins! Bog bodies! Dead daughters! Murderous hunger!
The main character is an unmarried companion to an old lady, whose science-minded married sister becomes violently sick and disturbed in the mind after finding an old corpse in the bog surrounding their estate. (A very gothic setting.) You have the creepy atmosphere, the mysteries, and the creeping sense that something is really wrong with Sarah.
I'd say the plot is quite predictable, but that's not really the point, rather the atmosphere and the characterization, which were both worth the read.
