I'm glad I listened to the audiobook since all of the French words and names would have had me stumbling a bit. There's an unfortunate lack of world building and the only real indication of the setting were the French words and names. The dialogue was one of the biggest issues for me as well.
I didn't love this one but I didn't hate it either. The Nina and Matthias vibes are very prevalent but Lou is no Nina and Reid is no Matthias. I'll try it again before the 2nd book releases but I don't anticipate it being a favorite.

I really enjoyed this book! I'm always impressed by how well Charlie Holmberg world-builds in only about 200 pages. I'd definitely love a spin-off set in the same world *hint hint*
I really enjoyed the little blurbs from the book of Mysting knowledge that Enna's Grandmother wrote and that Enna adds too. It's a great way to drop little bits of world-building without getting too bogged down it. I also found myself wanting to know more about the history of Enna's father. It sounds like he has had both an interesting and tragic life.

This definitely didn't feel long enough! As always, Pierce Brown's characters and story are captivating from the beginning. My only complaint is the same as I had with the first volume, I just don't love the artwork as much as it pains me to say. The dark and grittiness of the story comes across in it, I just dislike the lack of detail in the artwork.

Some of the stories were sillier than others but almost all of them were tinged with sadness. An unfortunate number of them dealt with domestic violence and patriarchal oppression, both things women all over the world deal with every day. I enjoyed the glimpses into the lives of the 14 different Syrian women and the Syrian culture and I hope Anna Halabi graces the world with another collection or book soon!
