This is a weird book to rate. There's some BEAUTIFUL lines in this but it's such a clunky compilation as a whole. I'm also kinda confused why you would go "Romeo and Juliet" in Israel-Palestine and not have it end like a Shakespean tragedy and be very surface level about the geopolitical conflict. It just seemed a little rushed. I don't know why it's so short. This could've been really interested if it was doubles in size and actually developed the geopolitical conflict.
3.5/5
Okay so I get the comparison to Code Name Verity but I'm totally failing to understand the Shadow and Bone comparison.
I really liked that we got a main character who was physically disabled. She's very independent, genuine, smart, capable and so damn strong. She was easily my favourite of all the characters. It took me some time to not hate the other main character who was pretty ignorant and rude for the book (no matter the justifications given).
I found the world building and political conflict to be REALLY lacking in development. It needed much more explanation. The ending plot was also kind of unsatisfying and abrupt. It needed another 2 chapters at least.

This is a good starter for anyone who knows the name Lizzie Borden but not anything about the actual murder and trial. Basically:
Lizzie Borden had a bomb ass lawyer.
How this book sits below a 3.5 on GoodReads is BEYOND me so I'm upping my 4 star to a 5 star to try and counteract that.
I have reasonable doubts.
That's all.

I liked this way more than Weber's other work. There's rep of dyslexia, autism and down syndrome which I don't feel like are included all that much. The characters were easily the best part. Girl wanting education and having STEM experience.
I was expecting more time to be spent in the labyrinth itself and the ending wasn't really...complete. It just felt like they forgot or weren't sure how to finish things.

Cool so my original long ass review just disappeared. Thanks! Much appreciated! Didn't put work into that at all. Anyway, the community seems to have finally gotten off the "burn the book! It's acknowledges racism" horse and read it. Congrats to Laurie for jumping up to over 4 stars!
Omg ow my heart at this cuteness. It's like if Molly Weasley was a single mother to Fred & George but one of them was a changeling!
So even though this book is HIGHLY OVERPRICED in Canada ($25 for a damn middle grade?! Really?!), I'm happy to own this. I'm such a fan of Ritter's writing but especially his characters. I'd truely be shocked if you liked Jackaby and didn't like this.

AHHHHHH! I'm so furious at myself for not picking up the final book yet! Pay day seems so far away now!
I love all of these characters! The dialogue and sarcasm are things that I would literally say. I found that the groups hierarchical structure faded away a lot in this one and put them all on equal ground--they all had something to contribute and surprised each other.
I definitely thought Mrs. Hoole was the villain so the ending really took me by surprise. Ritter incorporated a lot of comments on society at this time period like having a child out of wedlock. Some issues re one's we still deal with right now such as the drag queen. something she said really stook with me and it definitely transcends their time period:
"You're a sweet girl but open those pretty eyes. For me, they are all the wrong streets. I don't want to be careful Miss Abigail, I want to be Lydia Lee."
It pretty much broke my heart.
Abigail has grown up so much from the first book! She's strong and vocal and independent and loyal and honest. Her going to the underworld was so freaking cool! Her relationship with Jenny was also #relationshipgoals.
Jackaby is still such a mystery to me but I get the feeling everything will pour out in the 4th book and we started to see that more and more as this book went on.
hella excited for the sequel!

This is SUCH a Mindy McGinnis book and I can absolutely see why some people wouldn't like it. It's a big mindfuck book and incredibly weird ending with some pretty morally questionable characters.
Sasha herself is a very unreliable character who continues to deflect any bad actions on her alter ego. When she is in the cardiac wing, Sasha becomes an even more flawed character. Totally up front, I don't think you will feel any sympathy for Sasha after the first 50 pages. That aside, I DEVOURED this book in a few hours. It's weird as hell and I still don't know exactly what I read or what I feel about the ending.
