Ah! Okay so this wasn't as like high sci-fi/space opera I was nervous it would be. I LOVED Spensa. Like omg. She's so motivated and independent and agh! Just yes to her whole thing. GIRL SPENDS THE WHOLE BOOK ON A QUEST AND THERES LIKE ONLY ONE MAYBE KINDA POTENTIAL ROMANCE HINTING! THATS IT! I'm very curious about the like...void that makes her hear the aliens. Just want more of the world and politics unveiled. HERE FOR THE SEQUEL!
Question:
1. how messed up is your world if your pilot students have to space battle on their first day of school?
2. Your pilot program to fly SPACESHIPS is like less than 6 months? Really?
3.Omg ew we have rats on ANOTHER planet?!
4. Why do I have a thing for AI systems?

So if you like historical fictions or fantasies that are heavy politics, this is a good one for you. Even though it messes with history, the author brought in names familiar to anyone who followed real Tudor history as well as the key rumour/public opinions of Anne herself. Really interesting concept and with it being so very heavy on the politics (and therefore relatively slower paced), I think it's the perfect size/length. I actually got excited everytime a character was introduced or mentioned that had the name Howard or Parr cause...well I'm a snooty know it all when it comes to the Tudors (if we've being honest). I really liked that the author was realistic with this though. The religious tension and family lineage was still going to be messy with Anne alive or dead so that being such a focus really made a lot of sense.
I'll definitely continue the series.

Hmmm...okay I really enjoyed the mc and her focus on science and research. I now notice pieces of the cover that work with the actual story which I LOVE when they do that. Take the time to connect the cover and story. The ending had a ton of twists but full disclosure that none of them really shocked me and I'm blind to most betrayals and twists. The romance: it was put in because it's YA and apparently all YA books have to have stupid cheesy romances that offer no purpose to the story or character development. Ask yourself, "could these characters just be friends and the plot still work?" If the answer is "yes," STOP MAKING THEM SUDDENLY FALL IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER! Was the romance necessary? Naw.
Was it character development? Naw.
Needed for the plot? Naw.
Enjoyable? Meh.

I don't...know if I liked this? I have no idea what to rate it!
There were good parts but I just didn't like anyone for like a good chunk of the book. There's so much emotional manipulation and the weird statutory rape situation. I'm kinda utterly confused about what power everyone has. Like no one seems to actually know anything about each other which seems odd for a government of magic ppl. There was just a lot that I didn't get. However, I actually really liked the writing.

Y'all! I actually liked this WAY more than I thought I would! The asshole brother doesn't get to be an asset and then just get a pass (I've read so many damn books like that. Where it's just never challenged or anything). I liked the mc and her sister. I think the politics and magic needed a bit more fleshing out and I think the use of Marie Antoinette was less of a climax than I had expected. Good twist ending and lots of character development. Was actually impressed with everything Release did in one book under 450 pages.
I loved the inclusion of the hot air balloon. I don't know why but it was unexpected, fun and I just love seeing women involved with inventions and STEM.

This...reminded me of The Princess Bride? Maybe it's the writing tone? I dunno but it did. Also really like the mc and the adventuring with Butterblue. The magic system is pretty limitless but still made sense but I did want a bit more political structure. Really enjoyable read overall though!
I just freaking love these characters so much. The blase attitude of "of course there's dragons!" just makes it so much fun and ga. I love this series. It's so underrated

Oph this book was...weird to listen to as just an audiobook so keep that in mind with my review.
I know much of it is adapted from the podcasts by the authors but it's everywhere. There's no focus. The information is interesting but I feel so scatter brained in a million different directions. Each section didn't flow into each other. That being said, loved the narration and I'll look into the podcast.
