I love a good villain story.I love Marissa Meyers writing style and stories and plots and everything...
Ughhh I love this series. Don't want it to end and really hope it actually gets a film adaptation.
The story with Sibil leaving Cress on her satellite broke my heart!

ohhhh I Loved this! Thorne was probably my favourite with bring sarcastic and then sweet to Cress. I def want more Scarlet and Wolf but I assume that will come in the sequel.
Find it kind of disturbing how relevant this book--published in the 80s--is to 2018
I'm not sure why but I absolutely loved this book! I normally hate realistic contemporaries but...
It was so nice to read a book based in Canada with a female lead that was... (honestly concerningly) very similar to myself in her personality and experiences/fears. It's a super quick read that I will definitely read every once and a while

Cover betrayal! The cover is only vaguely related to the story of the book. The book takes a much deeper meaning with the term "Arsonist" so don't go into it thinking it's some murder/arson mystery set in present time. This book is actually more of a historical fiction mystery (which switches between a historical character, Ava, who lives in then escapes East Berlin and follows her for her next few years and a duo set in modern times.)
The mystery wasn't particularly suspenseful (for me anyways.) It was by no means boring but there's lots of time devoted to character growth while on the quest. I feel like I would've enjoyed it more if there had been some bread crumbs to link all of the mystery together since I saw them as different stories/quests until the very end.
The book had a bit of a slow beginning and I found the historic chapters much more fascinating than the present time ones. That being said, this was a fantastic book that included a time period I love (GDR/Berlin Wall). Bit of murder & romance but lots of mystery and loss.
The ending kind of broke my heart. While I think the cover is beautiful...it definitely does not match the story which is something that annoys me.

Firstly, this book was stunningly--I MEAN STUNNINGLY--designed. The cover/dust jacket is fantastic and I gasped and nearly fainted when I removed the dust jacket. The images inside and the black end pages are just absolutely amazing.
I wanna yell a "HALLELUJAH!" because this is a YA fantasy historical fiction with basically zero romance. I DIDNT KNOW THAT A BOOK LIKE THIS HAD EVER BEEN PUBLISHED.
I absolutely adored this book. The focus is family and sisters. Life just keeps hitting Odette and Tru's family with one struggle after another and those struggles shape them and I loved getting to see the end results of these people.
I enjoyed every character and the way the book was told switching between past and present tense made the flow much better than I think it would've been if it was all told chronologically.
My heart broke for Odd & Tru's mom when I got to the end. She always had the best intensions but ended up with so much weight on her shoulders. I loved the complete opposite personalities of the sisters but know what I loved even more? The sister relationship. they put each other before any romance or financial benefit. All this is done but didn't come off as cheesy which I am very thankful for.
I definitely want to read this book every year around Halloween time. As soon as I finished it, I realized that something that was mentioned very passingly was a way of hinting or wrapping things up. (I squealed when I noticed Tru's last name in the epilogue.
I really appreciated how the relationship between Odette and Cy's happened and ended. I don't want a million happily ever afters. I want growth and lessons and some failures and strong women when it comes to relationships that are wrong. Thank you for making Odette strong and fearless and loving and smart...and responsible. She isn't perfect but she knows what is good and what is bad. Her romantic independence/bond with her sister was and should have been the focus
Finally, this is the only book I can remember in recent years having a character with a physical disability. I do wish there was more of that in YA or books in general. Tru's leftover effects of polio slowed her down a little but she was never left behind and grew so much and developed such a default personality of being brave and proud. I want more of that! Her disability doesn't stop her from being a part of an adventure and in the end...the adventure would've gone deadly without her. ❤️

Interesting...so this is not a traditional North American written fantasy. This reminds me A LOT of oral stories I've heard during lessons from Metis, Cree, Stoney Nakoda and Mohawk peoples in Canada.
It's not a story about the characters or anything. It's the lesson of justice and power. Super interesting and unique read.
