The Arsonist by Stephanie Oakes
4.0

Cover betrayal! The cover is only vaguely related to the story of the book. The book takes a much deeper meaning with the term "Arsonist" so don't go into it thinking it's some murder/arson mystery set in present time. This book is actually more of a historical fiction mystery (which switches between a historical character, Ava, who lives in then escapes East Berlin and follows her for her next few years and a duo set in modern times.)

The mystery wasn't particularly suspenseful (for me anyways.) It was by no means boring but there's lots of time devoted to character growth while on the quest. I feel like I would've enjoyed it more if there had been some bread crumbs to link all of the mystery together since I saw them as different stories/quests until the very end.

The book had a bit of a slow beginning and I found the historic chapters much more fascinating than the present time ones. That being said, this was a fantastic book that included a time period I love (GDR/Berlin Wall). Bit of murder & romance but lots of mystery and loss.

The ending kind of broke my heart. While I think the cover is beautiful...it definitely does not match the story which is something that annoys me.
