Ugh my mood definitely influenced my enjoyment. I liked the concept and really enjoyed the characters but the plot just couldn't hold my attention. I'll have to reread it
3.75/5
This was actually a really cool premise and I think it would've maybe been better as a duology but solid stand alone nonetheless. Characters were all interesting to follow and I loved the issues with the magic. I felt a little let down by how the duels were written and it seemed to be lacking an actual climax (I just kept waiting for it but it never came).

This book (and the matching postcards) were beautifully illustrated! I don't know what to do with the postcards because I don't want to damage them! This book is accessible and fascinating to every age. Each woman is given a brief one page bio along with some fun facts and doodles that touch on their work, life and legacy. I am very excited for (and have pre-ordered) Rachel Ignotofsky's Women in Sports book that is set for a July 2017 release (and I hope that book will also get companion postcards).
I loved this book. Lots of sports covered and I didn't know most of the women discussed! Always happy to stumble upon new people. The book is written so it's very accessible as well as brightly illustrated.
Wow. I'll definitely have to read Ota Kraus' book
"Until now, I hadn't believed in heroes, but now I know they exist: Dita is one of them."
What a fascinating read! I found myself a little lost at time with the POV switching but still really enjoyed this book overall. How people went througg these horrors, I don't know that I'll ever truly understand...

Agh! I don't know how to classify this book! It's both an alternative historical fiction...and a contemporary? But maybe also fantasy?
There's so much diversity in this book of race and LGBTQ. There are very interesting characters and a very prominent representation of bisexuality. Despite that, the book is fun and heartwarming and takes place in Toronto and Muskoka. It ends very cleanly in a bow but it discussed things few books have. Overall, the theme is acceptance. Acceptance no matter your genetic make up because we can't change who we are. This book did a wonderful job of portraying that without feeling preach-ey or heavy or making me angry.
I Ioved the use of religion here. I grew up a holiday Roman Catholic but began questioning and became an atheist in high school (this was no big deal for me since most of my family did the same and I lived in southern Ontario). One of my biggest issues is the use of institutional religion to hate those different or to use it as an excuse to be a horrible abusive human being. I will fight to my last breath for you to get to believe whatever you want...until you use it to hurt other people. This book uses religion as a positive and it's what I hope institutional religion will change into.

This was an interesting book and in a good way. Can't remember the last time I read a book with magic and without vampires/werewolves/faeries. I am 100% terrified of bees now though so there's that. I also really enjoyed the romance...like a lot!
The overall wrap up and conclusion wasn't perfect. Definitely showed her lack of experience but that comes with time. The real problem I had came with the absolute lack of explanation for a lot of the supernatural stuff. Similarly, the ones that are explained are sort of explained. By sort of, I mean that it seemed like the author wasn't even totally sure where she was going with it.
I'll definitely pick up the companion book if it keeps the same cover theme cause...well it's got a gorgeous cover!

It's legitimately not fair how good this book is! I can't wait for my signed copy of Obsidio to show up!
This is hands down one of the best series I have ever read with a hella solid conclusion!
I don't know how or why but I forget that Kady and her crew are telling the story ever damn time I read Illuminae, Gemina and Obsidio!
Each book just gets better as we meet new crew members and find out more about the rebellion and BeoTech's sociopathic actions. I cannot recommend this series enough! I get such emotional whiplash and book hangover from each book. The pacing is insane with so much going on in the plot. The banter and dialogue and distinct personality traits that each character and relationship has is truly insane and perfect.
Also, the covers of this series are OUT-FREAKING-STANDING. I demand special editions of this series.

4.5...or 4.75...or 4.5...or4.75/5 ⭐
Weird and wonderful. So I literally fell asleep with my face in this book since I didn't want to out it down. There's a little romance but the main focus is a quest with the overall point being that we have to act on behalf of the greater good...even when it's harder than being selfish because those choices have long last effects on multiple people.
My only negatives we're that I don't think I totally understood the reveal of the main character's lineage or the reason for where she went at the end. I also still don't know what the heck happened to the mom in the original timeline! I think that could have been clarified by a couple paragraphs.
I really REALLY liked the setting and the writing. I liked that the author doesn't let the romance take the lead because it absolutely would have taken away from the quest. I thought the main characters father acted naively but I began to understand that firstly, that was consistent with his personality and secondly, their previously existing relationship would have given him optimism in the situation.
