~I received an eARC~
I cannot think of another book that I have associated with as much as Heretics Anonymous. The cast is so wonderfully diverse--and made a particular effort to give representation and/or mention to every group I can think of when it comes to religion and spirituality.
The comedy! I laughed out loud at least once a page. Michael has absolutely identical level and style of sarcasm. As someone who was an atheist and went to Catholic high school, I vividly remember noticing, thinking, and saying things he does. He also has a habit of putting his foot in his mouth for the first half of the book which was just...so incredibly hilarious (and oh so relateable)
While I most related to Michael, I found Lucy so incredibly interesting. I know so many people in their 20s and 30s who are not atheists or agnostics but they struggle identifying with official religious institutions because they have not modernized or refuse to acknowledge history.
The ragtag group in Heretics Anonymous was so well done and I loved all the debates and conflicts they have. It's realistic with all their different perspectives and personal priorities.
I cannot find a single thing about this book I didn't like. It did such a good job of presenting conflicts and a diverse cast without villainizing anyone. This is absolutely going to be a book that I reread (which shocked me since I am not a big fan of contemporaries). I read this in a single seating and can see myself doing that again in the future. Even higher praise: it's my second favourite stand alone of all time.

I received an ePreview Excerpt for a review

I definitely don't think this book is as good as Truthwitch or Windwitch but that could heavily have been influenced by only having a part of the book.
I am not totally sure if the beginning of the excerpt is the actual beginning of the book but I found myself kind of confused and looking for context or information about nearly everything for most of the 120 pages..
Arguably my favourite part of the first two books in this series is the relationships and that was just honestly absent from this book. Instead it was replaced with this odd POV/time switching perspectives that honestly did not in anyway do anything for the story other than make it choppy. Chapters weren't particularly long so everytime something started to happen there was a cut off and you got brought back to something else that really didn't have anything to do with what was going on in the other timeline.
Based on the layout of the eARC...I'm a little underwhelmed with the quantity of illustrations that appear to be getting slotted in for the final copy. There's large chunks without anything when I was hoping/thinking it would be a little more consistent like Language of Thorns by L Bardugo.
I'm also desperately hoping the rest of the book actually includes some magic because there was VERY little of that in this excerpt.
On the positive side, the ending really picked up and got me excited to get a final copy.

Hey! I learnt some new things! We don't really study Japanese history outside of their role in world wars. I love that they have a person that they think was real because of literature.
I really liked the illustrations.
Women: using mens belief that women can't do anything against them since before Japan was a country 😁👍

It's definitely a lot lighter with the details than some other stories I read and heard but it's a great way to introduce and explain this part of history to kids without scaring them.
How crap! How did I never learn ANY of this in school?! So freaking interesting and such an enjoyable read!
I don't think I enjoyed this book nearly as much just because it felt a little all over the place. It wasn't bad, particularly confusing or even really choppy, it just wasn't as funny or light as the first two books. The tone just took a little while to get used to.
I definitely think I want to reread the first and second book in order to appreciate how everyone's story wrapped up.
While I do wish there was a bit more comedy in this book, the comedy that was there made me laugh and giggle at least once a chapter. The rules/quotes at the beginning of each chapter we're so incredibly funny!
This cover is absolutely stunning!

I always love a Sherlock Holmes story. I really enjoyed Sherlock's daughter but wasn't crazy about how the Watson's we're portrayed. She had to spoon-feed them some basic stuff.

*awkward continuous cringing at racist sentences and terminologies*
I know it's a product of the time but I live in 2018...so... *Shivers* I feel dirty being around it

I'm a total sucker for books that discuss the importance and power of words...and basically all middle grade books right now.
I liked this concept and the authors writing but it seemed very on the surface. Her ideas could've been thoroughly done by making this into a duology or something instead of a stand alone. The ending also seemed a little rushed but an enjoyable read overall.
