I liked this! I'll definitely be picking you the next volume. There's quite a few scenes that made me laugh and I love how they made the Muslim family and community--the point of it is not to point out how they are Muslim but rather that they are just like every other family with overprotective parents and a geeky sarcastic daughter & an underachieving brother. I'm really excited to see where this goes.
PS I know SO many people like Zoe.So many and I'm so happy that was immediately brought up!

This is a fascinating story and one I never heard of. It's so easy to justify things like war because of politics and there's so much controversy about bombing because of the human casualties but we never think of the effect on other living things. It's rather heartbreaking that we live in a time where this is a real story and not a complete fictional creation.

I'm gonna take a better look at the horizon tomorrow...

Stories like this make me so horrendously furious. Please stop pretending that we in the West are the good guys in this situation because we have proved that we aren't. We're just the ones born geographically lucky. It's heartbreaking.

This isn't a book to be judged but one that everyone who has the ability to vote should be forced to read and analyze the images.

My dog had to keep comforting me because he sensed my anger and frustration.

3.5/5

This...was a very corky read. I kinda want to learn Dutch so I could read the original journals that the novel used. It is said to be a direct copy of the translation but I am SHOCKED at the lack of racism towards indigenous people which I know existed then. I also loved the cute background romance going on in the pictures and it really did give you a sense of how...one-sided the giving and helping was between settlers and indigenous peoples.

These illustrations are absolutely stunning. They look like real old photos. Whoever designed this book did an amazing job. I feel like the topic is more relevant than ever even with the book being over 10 years old. It really only takes a few minutes to look through and I feel like words would've taken away from the story. We all have heard the immigrant story but seeing it is not something everyone has the chance to do.

This is still my favourite stand alone novel ever.

This book is heartbreaking and I remember the first time I was suggested it was to explain to complexities of war. that person told me "not all Germans were Nazis and not all Nazis were German. I wish the world wars were that simple."

The ending totally broke me. the first time reading it, I threw the book across the room and was angry at the author but then I came back to that quote. War is unfair for people on both sides and it's so easy for us to look back now critically at this war in particular.

I feel like this should be required reading for schools.

PS I learnt (and pass along this bit of wisdom) to NEVER read The Book Thief and Sarah's Key back to back. It will destroy your faith in humanity.

I loved this. It's a small little book but really neat...if only my own textbooks had been this interesting...

I feel like this book should exclusively be read by audiobook. I loved reading the physical copy but the audiobook was just so fantastic!

The comparisons to ACOTAR are mostly because there is romance, faes and courts.

So I definitely enjoyed this book but...Look, this book is small and I feel like the romance was incredibly underdeveloped from the beginning which made it hard for me to buy into the entire plot of the book.

I don't know if it was over edited or Rogerson's just didn't write it but there was no build to their romance. If Rogerson was trying to do a "love at first sight" thing then she didnt explain it as well as she needed to. it just seemed like all of a sudden they were making these massive declarations of love and risking an awful lot for this relationship that didn't seem...worth it yet? I wish there would've been a chapter or two (or even a few scenes) that grew the romance so I could understand what they risked. You can't go from Fey & Rhys ch 1 to ch 55 of ACOMAF without developing the relationship!

I enjoyed the quest and magic but I feel a lot of things in the book we're just introduced and never shown or explored to the reader. this would've been fine if it was a series that would go more into it in the future but as a stand alone...it fell a little flat. I think the book was a fun read overall but definitely doesn't live up to the hype of being compared to ACOTAR.

It definitely showed that Rogerson is a new author and needs to develop and grow. Im definitely interested in seeing what else she writes.

This was a fast-paced adventure/quest story following a trio of pre-teens trying to save their homes and solve a decades-old mystery. The book just flowed so well and was so accessible. I wish this book would have been around when I was the target audience age because I know I would've just eaten it up! While it definitely is middle grade, it leans slightly towards YA so I am curious to see how the sequels will progress.

The trio are incredibly smart and brave and resourceful. They have very clear morals of what is good and what is bad which made the betrayal near the end even more heartbreaking. The group spends much of the book trying to prove to their families that they can take on bigger tasks and that they aren't willing to just roll over for a big corporation.

I loved the incorporation of events and people at so many different life stages and at so many different time periods (I think this really influenced how I saw the book being more towards the YA spectrum). The technology and world was something I could imagine as Ruby just took a famous city and added some neat tweaks to it (such as the elevator! The elevator gave me nostalgia for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.) The pet, Nine, was also adorable.

This was a creative and enjoyable middle grade/YA mystery that I am excited to keep following.

trigger warnings for self harm and abuse
What in the world is this emotionally and physically abusive garbage!?! Maybe it gets better better after but I'm about 60% in and just cannot take it anymore! There doesn't appear to be any analysis of the abuse, the characters have just gotten annoying and repetitive while nothing seems to happen while using the stupid love triangle with brothers trope. So done!
