The Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby
4.0

This was a fast-paced adventure/quest story following a trio of pre-teens trying to save their homes and solve a decades-old mystery. The book just flowed so well and was so accessible. I wish this book would have been around when I was the target audience age because I know I would've just eaten it up! While it definitely is middle grade, it leans slightly towards YA so I am curious to see how the sequels will progress.

The trio are incredibly smart and brave and resourceful. They have very clear morals of what is good and what is bad which made the betrayal near the end even more heartbreaking. The group spends much of the book trying to prove to their families that they can take on bigger tasks and that they aren't willing to just roll over for a big corporation.

I loved the incorporation of events and people at so many different life stages and at so many different time periods (I think this really influenced how I saw the book being more towards the YA spectrum). The technology and world was something I could imagine as Ruby just took a famous city and added some neat tweaks to it (such as the elevator! The elevator gave me nostalgia for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.) The pet, Nine, was also adorable.

This was a creative and enjoyable middle grade/YA mystery that I am excited to keep following.
