The first chapter is an indictment of the UT Knoxville hospital system's chaplaincy program and it is infuriating to listen to.
The rest of it is a basic good refresher on pastoral care skills (also is literally just systems theory). I recommend skipping the first and last chapter and only read the middle parts, if you're wanting a pastoral care skills refresher
slow-paced

I am convinced a robot wrote this.
And/or it's obvious this guy is the problem in his interactions
It only gets helpful toward the end when he cites another researcher's thoughts on dialogue. I'd skip the rest, really the final chapter, or even better look up whoever he is citing and read them instead

Really beautiful, moving and thoughtful book! I appreciated her nuance and care and allowance for a variety of choices and experiences.

There were glimmers of good stuff. But also a lot of bullshit, including several examples of ableism. Also Mars Hill did not become a toxic community bc it caved to the secular ways around it, it became toxic BECAUSE of the theology it taught and the warped faith it generated--that was 100% a church and a group of believers' failure, NOT an effect of the secular world 🙄🙄🙄🙄
The church has stopped working but these people do not really have much to offer in response

WOW so good!
I thought this gave such practical, and compassionate, information! Also every time I would be like "yeah but I wish she'd mention xyz" the very next chapter there it would be! I definitely liked all the exercises and assessment tools and the final chapters on being proactive in what you look for in relationships

Okay so I am not a fan of his, but a lot of people I am a fan of liked this book. It was fine. It had a few good parts. It was really hard to get past him being in thrall to the bush administration, still ,after all these years. The example he used from the tsunami was horrifying and completely lacked an understanding of grief or compassion. Also his "We shouldn't assign monolithic labels" thing apparently only goes one way, this is somehow terribly unfair to conservative voters but he can do it all he wants to other people.
I think the book could've concluded with the first half and been okay. The second half was a lot of me thinking "you sure you don't wanna just go to therapy rather than write a book?"

Very helpful and interesting until the last couple chapters where he tries to make a claim that we're all secretly narcissists and uses some questionable examples. I'd stop reading/listening before the final chapter if I were you and just stick with the earlier stuff
The walk through of enneagram types and narcissistic possibilities was v interesting

Finally finished this damn book and I am not finishing the series. What a disappointment in comparison to her other series!
I have spent all these books waiting for Paige to be smarter or prove why everybody thinks she's amazing. She continues to be so stupid and make amazingly bad decisions. Also she gets all this respect as Underqueen of London and yet she ends up connected with two clearly very well organized underground organizations that she could learn from OR defer to and she doesn't, she just keeps being stupid and thinking her way is the best way. It is exhausting.
What is also exhausting is her and Arctutus. There is zero chemistry. The only way I could see being invested in their dynamic is if when you read Harry Potter you thought to yourself "I sure wish Harry would hang out with these centaurs more" bc thats exactly what it feels like.
Anyhow I did this as a group read along and I am SO glad it's done so I can go back to reading good books/switch over to Roots of Chaos instead

Heartbreaking and powerful and so well-written (and well-researched! The notes at the end basically constitute their own chapter and are well worth a read)
I appreciated how Alex Mar brought out the nuance and complexity of the situation and of the people in it, and how she broadened the scope to pull in the systemic, cultural and political influences on this terrible crime
I wept at the end for Paula and for the Pelkes and for all the fighters and believers in this book. Beautifully done, and highly recommend reading it
