I'm not overly fond of classics, I find the writing difficult, however I enjoyed the inclusion of zombies. It felt fairly seamless, as if there had always been zombies amongst the Bennets and Darcys.
This book is excellent. It's about genies, which is a new one, and it's well written. I enjoyed the story and I love the main character. She's self aware and she's intelligent. She doesn't jump to conclusions or question herself the way most YA FMCs do. She thinks about things rationally and realizes things at pretty much the same speed as the reader. Everything that I thought would be another predictable annoying YA trait turned out to be slightly less than predictable, and actually very cool in the context of the story being told. Of course it ends on a cliffhanger, so now I'm desperate for the sequel, but I suppose I can wait a while.
It's kind of like a modern Frankenstein. A preacher obsessed with electricity starts to use it to heal and cure people, but some of them have disastrous after effects.
Very creepy. I love the dual narrative, and the way events in the book are presented to us. I love the ambiguous ending with Merry in the coffee shop. I love the whole coffee shop scene at the end, actually, where some "truth" comes out, but we don't know if it is the truth at all. Unreliable narrators are amazing. This book is great for fans of the exorcist - it's not nearly as scary as the exorcist, but it references it and has several chilling moments. A good late-night October read.
