This is one of those books where nothing much happens, but it's just so good. It's a book about family life. It's about the families. It's not plot driven- it's about the mistakes and regrets and moments between. If you prefer fast-paced, plot heavy novels, this won't be for you. The devastating way that Patchett writes families leaves me breathless. Commonwealth is like a Chekhov play, where nothing really happens but you feel terrible about it.
Religion, profanity, lots of drinking, vomit, pregnancy, derogatory language, sexism, infidelity, miscarriage mention, fire, cancer, divorce, drug content, medical content, gun violence, graphic violence, violence against Immigrants, death, minors drinking, racist language, family estrangement, family death, death of a child, abortion mention, suicide joke, suicidal ideation, addition, sexual content, neglect of children

I liked the premise of this book more than the actual book.
Divorce ranch in the 1930’s for rich ladies- maybe some romance, maybe some comedy.
Having Ward, a ranch staffer, as the narrator kind of made it awkward, especially since the story is presented as Ward looking back on his time on the ranch decades later. Why is an elderly doctor spending so much time thinking about divorcees and their Spanish nun underwear and what they ate for breakfast? This book has a lot of banter-y dialogue, which doesn’t add much to the plot. There are a few moments where I truly laughed, but overall, this book was pretty mediocre.
CW: divorce as major theme, death of parents, sexual content, animal death, vomit, suicide mention, poverty, religion mention
