This was ok, but could have been better. It felt very " I'm not like other nerds" lol! I wish this book had focused more on the nerdy side of Sonny, more DND, more nerding out, more of that geek culture. Sonny is presented as an underdog, but nerd culture has changed a lot in the past 15-20 years. Nerds are no longer the subculture, it's celebrated! I liked Sonny and his family. I wanted more about his relationship with his brother.

Yoon uses the phrase "I threw my eyes" or some variation a LOT. It's not a big deal, just a writing pet peeve of mine.

CW: Family estrangement, sexual humor, gross-out humor, bullying, lying, teen drinking.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I went into this book, but it wasn’t this.

The omniscient 3rd person POV took a while to get used to, but then I was hooked. Late eighties +The Crucible + teen screwball comedy= gold.

This book is hilarious and weird, and oddly educational. Field hockey isn’t really a thing, where I live, so this book was like a crash course in the sport. I loved how inanimate objects became characters, “The Claw,” “La Splotche” and “Emilio.”
All around, solid sports/witchy comedy.
If you listen to the audiobook, like I did, however, the quality isn’t great. The narrator often sounded like she was chewing gum.

This book is really about the pain of outgrowing friends. I really didn't like how the narration broke the 4th wall- what was the point of speaking directly to the reader?
