This was pretty good. I liked the way Goodwin wove in a lot of social history, rather than just focus on FDR. It was weird how she kept calling black Americans "Negros" out of quote marks though??
Really thought-provoking and interesting, though I felt I was maybe one notch too dumb to be reading it.
I had kind of low expectations for this book, mostly because I'd never heard of it before and the summary on the back of the cover didn't sound that great. (Obviously not the most valid reasons for judging a book, but there you go.) But Rushdie's writing is amazing, even if I didn't like this as much as I liked Midnight's Children. But something can be not as good as Midnight's Children and still be great.
Really well-crafted and clever. Plus who doesn't love a good read about the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic?
Um this was good obviously, but if you're not a contemporary of James Joyce you really shouldn't read editions of his work without footnotes, argh!
I really liked this book. I found all 3 of its intertwined storylines really compelling, and I learned things about ecology to boot!
