I received a free ALC from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

CW: rape

I have never listened to poetry on audiobook before, but I really enjoyed this one! It was read by the author, so I got to hear her words as she intended them to be read. This collection of poetry flowed together very well. I also liked this one on audio because it came across more like spoken word. I'd definitely add this one to my poetry collection.

CW: alcoholism, childhood sexual abuse, death, body shaming

A lot of BBBC folks suggested this book on audio and it did not disappoint. For one, it is long!! Which is great because it lasted more than one workday for me. This memoir is raw and vulnerable and full of emotion. I think the emotion is almost certainly enhanced by Jessica narrating the audiobook, and I would definitely recommend engaging with this book in that format.

CW: school shooting, gun violence, PTSD, anxiety

This book is especially good on audio as it is read by many of the student journalists (and their faculty advisors) who wrote the essays. Something that made this book stick out from other similar books I've read is that it included essays encouraging students' involvement in activism. It feels weird to give a rating to a book like this, but I tried to rate it based on how much I liked it in the audiobook format, which was quite a bit.

CW: disordered eating, mentions of sexual assault

I am not at all familiar with Arden, but it does not surprise me that she is a YouTuber. She narrates the audiobook and it is very well done. This was fun to listen to during a slow time at work and is a book I would have really liked to have back in high school.

CW: suicidal ideation, self harm, sexual assault, attempted suicide, queer slurs

This was a tough one to listen to as it described coming of age as a queer person in the 1990s, which is drastically different from 2020. Very dark, but an important story. The attempted suicide chapter is very explicit, but does have a content warning so you know to skip ahead if that may be triggering for you.

Not really sure how to rate this.... 3.5?

Really recommend this one on audio.

CW: racism, microaggressions

WOW. I really did not want this book to end. The story was so moving and the art was so beautiful. This book really expanded my knowledge of Korean culture, especially when it comes to gender roles and beauty.

CW: racism, microaggressions

This book is a bit more comic than graphic novel, which is not usually my go-to, but the booksellers at Downbound offered it as an option and I trust them with my literary life and they did not disappoint! This book is told through three different storylines and I was shocked at how wonderfully they all became one at the end.

3.5/5

I really enjoyed this one on audio, but will be adding this to my list of books to purchase as I'd love to reread and take notes in it. This book walks through adopting as a single, Black woman and it brought up so many factors I had never thought about before. I loved listening to Nefertiti's story unfold with her children and am looking forward to revisiting this one in the future.

I'm picky about ensemble casts, but this one was really good.
