absolutely phenomenal. this writing and this story and these characters were all i could’ve ever hoped to read. a mix of fantasy and mystery and full to the brim with love. the dark academia historical fiction aesthetic??? i’m in love

this was…. insanely boring. there were no real relationships formed between any of the characters, no real plot or scene setting. the whole book felt both rushed and way too long at the same time. i was really excited to read this but very disappointed in what i read :/ the premise was so entincing but the book sadly fell short! also: the main character was so easy to dislike. as he was ‘acting’ all the time, i never really got a feel for who he was and therefore couldn’t empathise with the character the author tried to create. oh well!

if you haven’t read this yet, what are you doing??? i absolutely love my crows w/ all my heart. especially nina (and wylan but mostly nina) now to prepare for my heart to be ripped to shreds by crooked kingdom soon <3
challenging inspiring

i feel really weird rating or reviewing someone’s personal memoir, especially as the experience isn’t tailored to me. this was a powerful book that showed a side of black queer peoples realities we don’t get to see in the media. this was important and inspiring and an absolutely essential read.

SCREAMING
this book was ridiculously cute and full with so many wonderful tropes. u loved these characters and i loved all of these cliché scenes. the writing style was beautiful and i finished the majority of this book in a day. i loved it so so much. read it rn! only complaint: i wish it was longer. this is perfect movie material: if you’re going to make a sapphic book to movie adaption please please please let it be this one. scottie and irene are angels and absolute nerds, i love these sport queers with my whole heart.

not much to say about this one. i just don’t think this is for me. overly cliché and overly cringey a lot of the time. there was little to no character development and the friendship group wasn’t rounded out at all. a disappointing conclusion to the series unfortunately :/ my favourite character was Cat, who was, in fact, a cat. i’m still going to go back and read the first books but this felt very much like a sequel and didn’t really stand on its own well even if it’s a completely separate story. the smut had more emotion than the actual story oops

this book was phenomenal. in so so many ways and i loved it so much. in this city of bones meets queer normality this book had it all.

whilst most complained about info dumping, i didn’t find this to be the case at all. all of it was well placed and i understood the setting perfectly.

the characters were all so loveable and the plot was so fun to follow along with. i laughed so much with this book.

nausicaä and vehan were my favourite characters for complete polar opposite reasons and the characterisations of every character in this book was phenomenal.

my only complaint is that it isn’t longer (and this review is very sleep addled, i’ll rewrite it in the morning 😅).

either way preordering ACOFL asap, cannot wait to see what happens next.

also also, the effortless use of neo pronouns and gender neutral pronouns was so amazing to see as well as actually using the word lesbian on page, which is surprisingly uncommon. i felt very accepted reading this, this book feels a little bit like home.

and also, for the record, place any 6ft tall sword wielding lesbian in front of me and i’m already in love. i’m very simple to please. and she’s sarcastic too??? nos’s hand in marriage pls

lighthearted fast-paced

this was v cute and for how short it was very well done. but it also wasn’t exactly anything special. the anxiety rep was beautifully done and it was a sweet little story that i’m glad i read. the lower rating isn’t because it’s bad,, there’s just not much to say about it

this was very sweet but it wasn’t the best book i’ve ever read. i think it was a lovely portrayal of healthy relationships and fighting for what you believe in but it was also kinda,, bleh. the side characters didn’t get much spotlight and didn’t feel very dimensional at all (besides june who i love w/ my whole heart). i think the hype actually made this book more disappointing for me. it was good tho! and has such strong positive messages :)

this book HURT. obviously, when reading, understand that you’ll always be looking through rose-tinted glasses on the boys lives and that makes seeing it for what it really is really really difficult. i loved this from start to end. it was painful and gut-wrenching, and during both the harder and lighter scenes i was fully immersed.

i loved the characters. i loved ruben particularly, with his struggle of being kept a secret and silent whilst struggling with a mother who invalidate everything he loves about himself. it was difficult. it really was. but his journey throughout the book, especially towards the end was very very moving- even if he came across selfish at times (everyone deserves to be a little selfish). he remained true to himself throughout the whole thing and that was so important- he wasn’t ashamed of his identity but he was shamed for it.

and i loved zack too! i really appreciated how his coming out experience was portrayed, the whole process and the reaction hit a little close to home and i felt very seen. i did however, think that this boy deserved a lot more apologies than he was given.

and as well as this, the other boys in the band held just importance to the story as the main characters, their lives didn’t revolve around what the main characters did and this separation was very well played out!

at times it was ridiculously cheesy but i loved it all the same, it just didn’t quite reach the five star mark for me though! (i think that had more to do with me being upset with the way they were treated so often, i’m holding a grudge :/)

also this book doesn’t pass the bechdel test so i’ve gotta rate it at least a little down.
