whilst this was enjoyable and i loved the characters, culture, magic and atmosphere, the plot felt very flimsy to me. and also just kind of boring? it sort of felt like a second thing to the novel itself. also, this read more middle grade than ya to me which put me off a little

i really loved the magical realism and the mix of stories with actions and how it motivated the characters, very cool to see! also kirby is a sweetheart <3

definitely more a me thing than a book thing!

an anxious nonbinary lesbian mc solving a murder mystery? literally what more could you possibly want

this was so fun, no notes, just a fun time! (with lesbian sheep! and anime mentions and a lot of bird related puns)

like bianca i’m also scared of everything so, reading this was great, i kind of wished that the anxious character wasn’t suddenly not anxious at the end after solving the murder mystery,,, because that’s not really how it works but that’s the only issue i had really! i know she wasn’t technically not not anxious but that’s what it felt like tbh. along with a couple instances of sentences and phrasing feeling more forced than genuine :,)

what am i meant to do now,,, how can i just move on from this book when harrow is everything i want in a character and more :,)

this was,,, so good. i read the entire second half in a day which is weird for me because this book is long and takes a while to get through! but during the second half i just couldn’t bare to put it down for too long

the characters, the atmosphere, the plot, the memes. it broke my heart so many times in so many ways but i adored harrow through it all <3

i fear nona isn’t going to unbreak my heart so what if i just,,, never read it

first book of 2023 finished and boy did it hurt. this book captured grief and growing up and maturing so beautifully. sara was a character i connected with and loved immediately. i’m pretty sure i cried the entire first 50 pages (and most of the last 50 pages tbh 🄲).

i did find that it dragged quite a lot during the middle and i just didn’t really enjoy emilie’s perspective as much, which is no fault of the book! i just don’t have as strong of a connection with her character which took away from the enjoyment a little :,) i still thoroughly enjoyed!

okay! apparently unpopular opinion time according to the 4.4āļø rating on goodreads but here we go: this book was awful. plain and simple. not only did the content remain entirely boring, with it being entirely chatting and continuing on for pages and pages more than it needed to but it was also 80% sex talk/jokes, 15% problematic content and 5% enjoyable story. i was really looking forward to this after seeing some wonderful reviews but i’ve never been more let down by something. as someone that only dnf’s in a ā€œi’ll pick it back up laterā€ kind of way, this is my first actual DNF, will not pick up again. and it is DESERVED.

problematic content (highlights šŸ™ƒ)
• repeated use of the word ā€œrapeyā€
• continuous sexist and borderline transphobic comments
• admitting to performing sexual acts by a twenty year old thinking about a 15 year old (multiple times!)
• swearing on every page at least 50 times (that one’s more personal annoyance)
• ignorant use of language in reference to sam’s romani mother

and probably more in the last 30%, yikes!

to the people that enjoyed this i think you really need to think about the content you’re reading 🄲

i enjoyed this book but i also wished for a lot more from it. it felt very linear which is just something i personally don’t enjoy in books! i can definitely see why it’s some peoples favourites :)

some of the quotes in here though,, and just a trans reimagining of a classic,, i wish there was so much more literature like this
