This is a gorgeous, lyrical short story that you’ll fly through and finish desperate for more.

‘Venom’ is a short story that takes place in a small village in Thailand. The cast of characters is very small and our protagonist remains unnamed.

The human and animal binary is broken down - and for those that don’t know this is my jam (it was my dissertation twice).

The writing is so vivid that, honestly, you’re so wrapped up in that world that anything could happen and you’d love it. It made this short story of less than 100 pages feel much vaster.

I am so in love with this book and may reread it again soon. It’s definitely worth reading - and given it’s so short it would be rude not to squeeze it into your TBR. Will definitely be looking at more from this author, translator and publisher!

THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK. I am obsessed. I will be thinking about this book for the rest of my life. I would give it a thousand stars if I could.

I want to protect everyone of these characters (bar Laskia). They could step off the page they’re so perfectly formed.

We’re eased into this new magical world and this gentle introduction just helps you fall in love with everything in it.

There’s so much more in store for this world and it feels incredibly exciting as you get through the book. I pray this series never ends - I never want to leave these characters or this world.

This made me think of Prison Healer and I just loved everything about it. It’s a must read for everyone - a perfect YA fantasy. And IT COULD GO ANYWHERE!! I am anxiously awaiting the next book and will be shouting about this forever.

I feel like this one just didn’t quite deliver, but had a lot of promise.

Our protagonist can barely be described ‘the hero’, she essentially just floats through this book afraid to stand up to anyone and fretting about how she’s perceived and her future.

And the aha reveal at the end felt like a cheapened shot that kind of came out of nowhere.

From the very first page I loved this book. I don't know what I expected from it - but it delivered a truly heartwarming story of finding yourself.

Did you realise found family could be an octopus? Me neither, but I'm here for it. Marcellus is by far the best character here and I happily would have read a book entirely about him. His 'voice' was utterly believable and it was brilliant seeing both sides of their conversation and how the humans would misunderstand him. Marcellus is our true hero and he gets the ending he deserves.

At its core, this just felt hopeful. There's a joy and peace to be found from looking to the past, it can unlock a future that once felt out of reach.

I didn't expect the mystery element of this book - but watching the puzzle pieces slowly fall into place was brilliant. I truly didn't think it would all tie together the way it did and it was pure mastery from Van Pelt pulling that off.

I adored this book from beginning to end. It's a must read for anyone looking for an unexpectedly joyful and hopeful story. Looking forward to more from this owner.
