Hosseini's writing is truly one of the most simple, yet most heart wrenching writing I have ever read. To casually be reading up until you get hit with one lines. I loved how he was able to use his platform to raise awareness on the female experience in the middle east, however, there were some occasions when I felt like the writing felt a bit short when describing those experiences. It would have been nice to read a similar story written by a woman who may or may not have experienced the events that take place in this story. However, even with those limitations, I think Hosseini did a good job representing a very underrepresented demographic.
not much plot going on in this book but this book is beautifully written! i loved being able to read the two main characters perspective in life and how their own privilege and lack of privileges leads to those thoughts! if you like books where theres a lot of action this might not be for you!
I am so sorry, but the writing in this book just isn't it for me...The writing seems corny and while its sad it never really captured grief the way its experienced? The writing was too blunt, to me grief is always somewhere and you're never sure where its just always there? I don't know how to explain, I'm happy others were able to enjoy this book but it was not for me.
mildly gay but the writing is great!!!
4.5 stars really! seeing the plot unfold through rachel's experience being right in the middle of it was fun and interesting to read (and at times stressful). i like the idea of only knowing what she knows although i am curious about how James felt throughout all of it!
i love the complexities of the characters and their relationships with each other and the emphasis on platonic love!!! also love the slight touch on social issues and how it affects people in very real scenarios w/o being a huge focus in the book!

published in 2016, interviews and quotes from even before and still very much relevant today. i love to see angela davis' mind work. her ability to put into words the importance of advocating for all issues as it ties together is amazing. she is no doubt a huge and leading voice in modern activism.
read this for a book club at work and i LOVED it!! need more books with unreliable narrators
maybe its bc everyone on social media claims this book will change my perspective on life as a whole but it was very dissapointing...it fell really short for me. like many self help, philosphical-ish type books, this book is too straightforward and fails to take into account other factors that may lead to unhappiness. while mindset IS important, so are many other variables. writing it off as if your thoughts being the only thing at play feels dismissive and irresponsible. not to mention the "everything is god" section which takes away any sort of relatability to this book for people like me.
