The merit of the poems is undoubtably very high, but I rate according to my personal enjoyment, which is only a three. I think it would be very nice for a parent to read these to a child who loved to learn.
I found this little 1977 original edition book in a used bookstore the day after my Dad died. Because it is about a father and his children I knew this was a special find. I'll always treasure it.
I've been scouring the internet for spoilers and can't find them! I'm really frustrated with this novel's string of cliches and repetitions and "telling rather than showing." It's so boring. I just wish I could figure out what happened from skipping to the end. How annoying.
I won't repeat all the great things in other favorable reviews, but I loved this book. If you came to it by way of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, which mentions it at least three times, you won't be disappointed. You can see where Bill W. got the fundamental 12 step concept of "higher power as you understand it." Bill was a huge admirer of James and Jung as well.
Excellent! This is deserving of 5 stars but I rarely rate books perfect unless they were 100% enjoyable all the way through. I struggled to understand. Sometimes it was slow-going. He hardly mentions creationism at all which is a positive for me. I loved this book.
I had high hopes that this Huberman podcast recommendation would address the biggest worldwide addiction of all, internet and technology. I am a recovered alcoholic with 25 years in Alcoholics Anonymous and did not learn anything from her multiple chapters on drugs and alcohol. I believe she is dead wrong that those substances can be "moderated" -- this is a progressive illness. This is one of those boring books I skimmed through in an effort to find a single word of wisdom that would help my everyday addiction to tech, but no. Not a great layout of all that dopamine and other neurotransmitters do, either. By the way this is the whole saying which she mistakenly truncates to "I am responsible" in AA literature:
"I am responsible
When anyone, anywhere
Reaches out for help,
I want the hand of AA to be there,
And for that I am responsible."
You'd be better off going to a few 12 step meetings (online if you want) than to spend time with this book. For me Internet and Technology Addicts meetings are somewhat helpful.

Enjoyable parts about biology and evolution. Good motivation to add balance to workouts. My mother died from a fall and I read this because I've been to physical therapy for balance and si joint dysfunction. I think other readers are too hard on this book but like them I skimmed chapters on circus performers and pilots, etc., which might interest some. Peter Attia's book Outlive has an excellent chapter about stability which I recommend for more practical info.
