Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence
by Anna Lembke
I had high hopes that this Huberman podcast recommendation would address the biggest worldwide addiction of all, internet and technology. I am a recovered alcoholic with 25 years in Alcoholics Anonymous and did not learn anything from her multiple chapters on drugs and alcohol. I believe she is dead wrong that those substances can be "moderated" -- this is a progressive illness. This is one of those boring books I skimmed through in an effort to find a single word of wisdom that would help my everyday addiction to tech, but no. Not a great layout of all that dopamine and other neurotransmitters do, either. By the way this is the whole saying which she mistakenly truncates to "I am responsible" in AA literature:
"I am responsible
When anyone, anywhere
Reaches out for help,
I want the hand of AA to be there,
And for that I am responsible."
You'd be better off going to a few 12 step meetings (online if you want) than to spend time with this book. For me Internet and Technology Addicts meetings are somewhat helpful.
