A very beautiful, lyrical book. I like Yoon's sparse writing style, with its third person narration which leaves the reader guessing a lot about the main protagonist, especially towards the end of the novel.

There were parts of this book that were truly beautiful to read. The first couple of vignettes are by turn unsettling and comforting, depicting family life that's both nurturing and destructive. However, the book progresses at breakneck speed and could do more if it was slower towards the end & also reveled the end in a much more suspenseful way. Overall, it was a gripping novella.

It was boring.

I thought this book would go deeper than it did; most of the time, it felt like the author was a tourist marveling at just how smart and brilliant indigenious folx were but in a very superficial manner. Like the way a person praises a monkey for doing tricks.
