From the first few pages, I was bored. A teen likes hot peppers, has a bad boy complex. So what. Who cares.
Absolutely incredible collection of essays that makes you rethink a lot of what you see in the media or read prior about what it means to be black in America (especially the Phillis Wheatley article, the walking article and Claudia Rankine's article).
Some interesting ideas but shrouded in dense academic theories at times, which makes it hard to realize what the point is. Really grounded in Early Bollywood, which is interesting, but could have focus on connecting that to modern Bollywood?
Hong's poetry tests the boundaries of English, of poetry itself when she plays with this pidgin English. In the tension between the Historian and the Guide she teases us, asking us to think critically about what is kept and what is left behind in history, the lives that are extinguished between history's paper-thin pages.
