The three Hollow girls go missing without a trace on New Years Eve. One month later, they reappear with seemingly no memories of their time away. But the girls are different somehow.
Ten years later, the youngest Hollow Iris becomes concerned when her oldest sister Grey disappears. Is it happening all over again? Where did they go all those years ago?
This book seamlessly weaves fantasy, fairytales, and folklore into a thriller novel. It remind me of stories I used to hear in childhood, the morals of which were always to be wary of strange things in the dark.

Mr Steinbeck truly did have insight into the human spirit. I hoped and mourned with Adam, I dreamt with Samuel, I raged with Cal, I felt Lee’s love and frustration, I was stunned by Cathy. I was transported back to a tumultuous time out country’s history when people feared drought, fought in wars, and when some people were content with their patch of dirt to farm and a dream.

Parikh does an amazing job capturing life for those who weren’t certain they would live to see another day. She touches on issues of race, physical disability, hardship, resilience, love, and regret. Definitely worth a read
