To be honest, I wished this book had a stronger middle. I think it starts off really well, diving into the history of witchcraft and the misogyny surrounding it, but loses momentum from there. I read one comment that said it read more like blog posts, which I 100% agree with. I wished that the three topics (being Witchcraft, the term and idea of a Slut, and Feminism) flowed more naturally and had more to do with each other. I expected more of the topics connecting to one another, but got more here is female sexuality, now witchcraft, and here is feminism. I think this book has potential, but not my cup of tea. Although this book is quite short, it is also terribly long, and I actually struggled through it (could only read a chapter or two per day).
If you are a reader who likes to jump around, you can! The chapters really don’t have anything to do with each other, so you can really read them in any order.

Honestly, just read the damn thing. Such a cute story, and so tempted to get the second volume asap.
This harks back to the saying of see how a person treats their family to understand who they are. This book shows how Fred Trump destroyed his children from the count of one, pit them against each other and the world, and helped enable the man who is today the President. I think this book is an important read to people who actually want to understand why the President does what he does, but I hope that we don’t continue to have to understand this President.
Honestly, if I didn't have to read this book for work, I don't think I would've finished it. The first half of the book is quite useful, but after that it got super repetitive. For example, one example will get mentioned, then not really talked about again for half of the book, then it does a deep dive. This would be fine, but the first mention of it really did it justice. I felt it repeated the same information about growth vs. fixed mindset. It also brought up Columbine out of nowhere, had the main reason that Columbine be used as an example factually incorrect, and kind of validates the massacre. Honestly, after that point the book really lost me.
It’s been a while since I’ve read young adult, now I realize I need to get back into it. I really enjoyed reading this book. At one time I too was a depressed teen denying my sexuality, so it hit home. I wish the last section wasn’t as rushed as it was. If there are any more books following this one, I will be more then delighted to read them.
Honestly, this book is just a fun time. I loved how it was split into three sections (cryptid, folklore, mythology) and acknowledge and pointed out white washed/colonized information. I was lucky enough to stumble across this on Etsy, and so happy I spent the money on it!
It gives a quick summary of the different creatures, allowing you to explore deeper and do your own research if so inclined.

The last time I read this book I was 11, now a decade later, I picked up this series again to re-read before I read Midnight Sun. (As a side note: what a great marketing thing they did, get all of the people who were tween/teens when they first picked up the novels to come back into the world as adults). I have to say, 11 year old me liked the story way more, but 21 year old me can really appreciate the writing.
Of course, you have to accept this book as a mushy love story. Yes, after having a decade between reads, there are so many red flags when it comes to Edward (I’m still on Team Alice when it comes to the Team Edward/Jacob thing). Knowing it was written in 2005, and I read it in 2010, you just have to accept that it was slightly different back then. I see it like how I watch Alien 4. If you know it’s not going to be good, you can have a real fun time with it.
The writing is actually way better than I remember. Lots of big words that I’m pretty sure 11 year old me didn’t understand so didn’t remember. As someone who could only make it through the first 2 chapters of 50 Shades (a.k.a. the fan fiction of Twilight), this book is expertly written. Way better than it should be. Like... holy shit, it’s really well written.
In the end, it’s a mushy romance. It’s interesting to see the spin on the mythology that we all make fun of today, but the book surpsingly still holds up today (if you ignore flip phones and CD players). Excited to read Midnight Sun and see how it compares and keeps with continuity.

Okay, if you read my Twilight review, you basically have the mkain story things for this book.
I would actually give this book a 3/5. I found reading this back to back with Twilight that I got bored a lot (having essentially read the same story twice in a row). I found that the book was about 150-200 pages too long. Twilight was only 498 (I think?), while this one was 662. During the last 10 chapters, some important character conversations I thought would have been added weren’t, and throughout the whole book a lot of conversations that didn’t really needed to be included were. Although, I did like the gaps that were filled during time jumps in the first book.
The extra star, making it a 4/5 for me was continuity. You can actually tell that time and thought was put into this book. All of the moments from the first one line up perfectly. The original story was published in 2005, so I was expecting some slip ups with the 15 years between novels. But... there were none. You can also tell that Stephanie Meyer actually gave a shit about her fans, dedicating the book to them and acknowledging them at the end. It was cool to see that she actually cared. Now, if only we could get a book based on only Alice... (btw, I’m team Alice all the way as she was one of my lesbian awakenings when I was like 11).

Very cute quick comic! I believe it was originally a tiny web comic. It's amazing to see the diversity of illustration from Sarah (I have some of her other works, including a calendar). Also, the hardcover is amazing. Amazing texture, and coloured edges!!!
