A wholly new fairy tale, using enough tropes that it feels entirely old. I would like to read a series of books that fleshed out the side-quests mentioned in this book.

Solid meditation. It is both authentically interesting and off-putting that the colors are not matched to emotions that they would be in a western mindset. For example, red is the color of safety in this book, and the image looks more to my western eyes like a fire alarm is going off than like someone is relaxed and grounded. Would take unpacking when reading with children.

Great depiction of global demographics. I especially liked the page on wealth. It is shorter than I'd wish, but on the other hand sometimes being too in-depth can sink a children's nonfiction. On the whole I think it balances information and density pretty well.

Solid witch story in a familiar world. Fairly standard magical system, but saved by a good friendship drama.

DID NOT FINISH

Sorry stories are always a little hard to finish, for me. I read two and a half of them, but ultimately got frustrated with how many stops and starts it required of me. Still, the ones I read were fun.

Heartwarmingly affirming, set firmly in high-fantasy realm. A perfectly crafted adventure tale of intrigue. Give to literally anyone who will read it.

A lovely and complex piece of art, with musical rhythmic text and gorgeously detailed artwork. Works better as a couch read-aloud than as a storytime book, because the artwork is too detailed to be properly appreciated from a distance.

Very sweet story along similar lines as Narwhal and Jelly, though not quite as well done. Still very sweet, and i like the affirmation that even when you are cranky you can have friends who love you.

Very solid children's fantasy, in the theme of castle intrigue, at a level that children can completely understand. No "who is actually the bad guy" plot twists, just solid lines and dependable characters, in a fun and familiar fantasy environment. Very similar in feel, though not in content, to the Upside Down Magic series by  Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins.
