inspirational book, but nothing to it, all fluff

On the one hand, it's got kind of an "issue book" vibe. On the other hand, I don't know many books about ace people, let alone graphic novels, so it's filling a much needed role. And it's doing so gently, which I appreciate. 

On the one hand, I like the honest portrayal of Sensory Processing Disorder and the real emotions that Lou experiences. On the other hand, poverty is not synonymous with neglect, a point which is not addressed well enough in my opinion.

In fact, the main things she seems to like about being at her aunt's and uncle's are having an iphone, eating enough, and sleeping in a nice bed. These are all nice, but though her anger at her mother for not accepting family support feels genuine to a 12 year old, readers are given no other viewpoints to contrast it with. Was her mother neglectful, or simply poor? Maybe neglectful, but in my opinion the case isn't made well enough.

Super sweet! Not a ton of plot, but I like that the big bad is vanquished with kindness. The interspersed Spanish is a nice touch. 

A wonderful retelling of Tchaikovsky's swan lake, queering it along the way. Perhaps it's because I was feverish, but I was struck by how much of a fever dream the original sorry is. If anything this retelling tones down some of the over the top plot points, but it's done really well such that I don't mind it.  

Beautiful illustrations and a very well told emotionally resonant story, sadly undercut by strong moralizing. Still, I enjoyed this read. 

Boundaries are so important, as this book illustrates. Even among friends. And the illustrations are great too. 

This books is fine, but it feels as if it is written for adults. Where is the appeal for a child?
